Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott, Henry Fonda, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Robert Ryan, Clint Eastwood, even Fred MacMurray did some westerns, man you ain't even started yet, so get started you got to get 'em all before you go over the great divide. Best of luck.

If you can get "Ride with the Devil" it is a good one. It is set in Civil War Missouri and has good gunfight/battle scenes and seems to put you back in that time/place.

It might not be considered a true western but I always liked "The Cheyenne Social Club" with Henry Fonda and Glen Ford.

Tom Beringer did a good one "The Last of the Dogmen."

Do you mean you're running OUT of westerns to watch? How about the new one? You know, what's playin in the theaters? Have you checked that out lately? Huh? Reason I went thru all this is that there's a hell of a good movie, (IMHO) called "Appaloosa", recently in theaters, now available on home video, which is a really good movie, but if you're focusing on older ones & not lookin out for what might come next down the pike, you're missin out. Clint said it's over, & I'm a BIG Clint fan, but SOMEBODY'S gonna do a western movie & there's new stuff comin out all the time, some good some bad, certainly, but check it out

Tommy Lee Jones in "Good Ol' Boys"! You'll not regret that acquisition. If you don't like it, tell me what it cost ya... I'll re-imburse ya!

Some more:

Obviously of various quality, but you really need the entire Lonesome Dove series.
Nevada Smith with Steve McQueen
James A. Michner's Texas
Land Raiders with Telly Savalas
Sam Elliot in You Know my Name
Many here didn't like it, but... Seraphim Falls with Pierce Brosnan and Liam Neeson... really a good story about vengence and guilt; watch it all... gets a little boring in the middle, but...
Another off-the-wall western is Gunslinger's Revenge with Harvey Keitel and David Bowie, yep... outta the box casting, but fun flick.
Any western with either Tom Selleck or Sam Elliot
And don't forget the 2 or 3 that have Willie Nelson!

"The Wonderful Country" - vintage Robert Mitchum trying to cut ties with his pistolero past in Mexico.

"The Last Hunt" - Stewart Granger and Robert Taylor set out to finish off the last big buffalo herd. Real Sharps, 1876 Winchester, tong tool reloading...

"Matewan" - Not a western, but a good story based on labor troubles in the West Virginia coal fields in the early Twenties.
Good shoot out at the end, and the town police chief - Sid Hatfield - is my kind of lawman. (Hatfield was a real person and was subsequently murdered while being tried in another county for killing three of the Baldwin-Felts goons.)

Open Range with Kevin Costner....one of the best Westerns ever made....I can watch that gunfight at the end over and over and over and..... :D
Once Upon A Time In The West.....another classic...watching Henry Fonda play a real "bad" guy is great....
The Magnificent Seven.....of course...
The Wild Bunch....yeah baby....machine guns AND a Western to boot....more lead flyin' than is humanly possible...

And of course....Blazing Saddles....It's a Western...sorta....It has horses, cowboy hats, and single action revolvers.... :lol:
Some people just need a sympathetic pat on the head.....with a hammer. Repeatedly.

It's not a Western in the truest sense BUT:

"Death Hunt" staring Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson is based on a true story about a fur trapper fleeing trumped-up murder charges. It takes place in Canada. Marvin plays the part of a Mountie and Bronson is the trapper.

Bronsons character is based on a fellow by the name of Johnson who was dubbed the "Mad Trapper" in Canada.

A lot of action, shooting, fist fights, etc...

"Rustlers' Rhapsody" with Tom Berenger is a delightfully humorous spoof of the classic western. Any true old-time western fan will love it! :lol: :lol:

Western of the time before leverguns: the Mountainmen starring Brian Keith and Charlton Heston... two mountainmen of the heroic stripe.
Jeremiah Johnson with Robert Redford;
Western with a modern flavor, again a Robert Redford role, The Electric Horseman;
and one of my favorites, the Cowboy Way with Kiefer Sutherland and Woody Harrelson;
do a search on Sam Peckinpah, he made some notable westerns, including Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, the Wild Bunch & Pat Garret & Billy the Kid, along with being the writer, director or actor in various tv serials;
another Jimmy Stewart role, the Naked Spur;
and if you really want to get a good collection... visit Internet Movie Database and do a search on "westerns"... over 11,000 titles. It'll give a good start for searching, sometimes having links to trailer and reviews... enjoy!

One of my favorites that you rarely hear of is "Harry Tracy" witth Bruce Dern and Helen Shaver and Gordon lightfoot of all people as the US Marshal
Set in 1900 and based on a true story, Something about the dark way this movie was filmed adds a sense of realism, it has a few humorous spots but is a somewhat gloomy realist type western overall.

The Grey Fox with Richard Farnsworth is another often forgotten one and "More dead than Alive" with Clint Walker is another, That one has Vincent Price in it.
You don't normally think of Vincent Price and Westerns in the same breath.
The Wannabe gunfighter kid in this movie gets what is coming to him in a rather disturbing death scene. He had it coming but you almost feel sorry for him.

I also liked "Death Hunt" mentioned above with Charles Bronson. Another somewhat funny western with Charles Bronson and Jill Ireland was "From Noon till Three" I've only seen it once and haven't been able to find it again but I remember it as being quite funny.

You mentioned you had Jimmy Stewart, One of my favorites of his is "Fire Creek" You don't hear of that one much and "Will Penny" with Charleton Heston is another good one.

Barbarosa with Willie Nelson was good. Red Headed Stranger with Willie was ok, Liked Barbarosa better though.

One funny movie that is kind of sort of a Western is "Hearts of the West" about early silent film western actors,
Not really a Western in the true sense but really funny and well done.
I'd like to thank President B.O. and Ms Pelosi.........

Love to hate Bruce Dern Charaters
Death hunt....oneof my favorite Charles Bronson Movies
Forgot about Firecreek....That got Roscoe "P" Coletrain in it :wink:
Mountainman.... Brian and the President! Have not seen that one
Woody Harelson...Cant watch him....at all....
For some reason I cant watch "Once Upon A Time In The West"
I think it because of the music...
The Magnificent Seven.....of course I have that one...
I cant watch Blazing Saddles....

"The Wonderful Country, "The Last Hunt", Matewan"
I never heard anything about these movies...

"Good Ol' Boys"!, Gunslinger's Revenge ...never heard of those either...
Griff thanks for the link....Internet Movie Database
Now we're getting someplace....

I was reading where it was a 12 Gauge sleeved with 8 gauge tubes to give it the appearance of huge muzzles. Not sure how they could have done that and made it blend into the recoil shields.?

"The Professionals" with Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Jack Palance.
One of my Favorites.
Another vote for " Once Upon a Time in the West"

The HBO movie "Rough Riders" was pretty good. I thought Tom Berenger played a pretty good T.R.

Not exactly a western but "The Wind and The Lion" is full of great hardware and
a good story.

The Culpepper Cattle Company is a great movie. They did a lot of research when they made it and it is supposed to be very authentic as far as the characters gear.

Not your typical western series but I highly recommend a series called Firefly. It's a space western so to speak but the second in command carries a mare's leg and Jayne (very cool) carries a modified LeMat revolver. Space ships, horses, leverguns, wheel guns, laser guns, preachers, pirates and whores this show had it all. :D

Gregory Peck starred in some really classic westerns, too; made back when I was a kid, in the fifties.

For comedy, try Paint Your Wagon with Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin.
Lee Marvin is very funny in this one.

I love the Lonesome Dove series ----- This is the order it was made

Lonesome Dove --- 1988 or 89
Return to Lonesome Dove 1993
Dead Man's Walk 1994
Streets of Laredo 1996 (i think)
Comanche Moon 2007

But if you want to follow the plot line perfectly, it would go

Dead Mans walk
Comanche Moon
Streets of Laredo
Lonesome Dove
Return to LD

Also : Maverick, from 93 or 94, (obvious) Tombstone, Pale Rider, Unforgiven, Nobody mentioned the recent Brad Pitt Jesse James movie, but it was very good

Quigley Down Under is awesome. Combination western , drama and comedy --- co-starring a sweet Sharps in .

If it's horses and shooting you want to see, get an Australian movie called "The Lighthorsemen". It contains the most magnificent cavalry charge ever filmed, and it actually happened. A three mile charge through artillery and machine-gun fire.

I have the Jesse James Brad Pitt movie.
It's not too bad and kind of sorta follows the real story line.
I've watched it about 4 times.
Hollywood always changes facts for whatever reason, the most glaring in this movie was the reason Bob Ford and Dick Liddell shot Wood Hite.
Wood Hite suspected Liddell was setting him up for capture, and that's what caused the shootout, It wasn't because Liddell was messing around with Hite's stepmother as shown in this movie.
Also Liddell carries a Brass framed Navy in this movie which would have been unusual in the 1880's and even more unusual that a brass framed navy which would have been a southern manufactured gun would not be completely worn out by the 1880's.
I also don't believe that the real life Ed Miller, and Charlie Ford would have been quite as wimpy in real life as they were portrayed in the movie and the last thing is Frank James looks to be around 60 in this movie when in real life he was only a very few years older than Jesse.
Other than that It's pretty good.
Brad Pitt did a pretty fair job of playing Jesse James.
I over analyze movies too much if they are based on historical fact.
I think that's why I generally prefer fictional movies to biographical.

mklwhite wrote:Not your typical western series but I highly recommend a series called Firefly. It's a space western so to speak but the second in command carries a mare's leg and Jayne (very cool) carries a modified LeMat revolver. Space ships, horses, leverguns, wheel guns, laser guns, preachers, pirates and whores this show had it all. :D

You beat me to it.

You'll also like the TV series "Jericho" if you didn't catch it when it was on.

How about The Stalking Moon with Gregory Peck or Hombre with Paul Newman, Tell Them Valdez is Coming with Burt Lancaster.

'Evil Roy Slade' with John Astin;
'Five-Card Stud' with Robert Mitchum and Dean Martin;
'Bandolero' with Jimmy Stewart, Deano, and Raquel;
'Waterhole No. 3' with James Coburn and Carroll O'Connor; and
'Dirty Dingus McGee' with Ol' Blue Eyes.

Not the usual fare, but entertaining.

I will throw a curveball in there. "Copland" from 1997, with Stallone, DeNiro, Keitel and a few others was originally conceived as a western by the writer, aNd it watches like a modern western. Very cool movie -- a little bit of "blue language" but thats pretty common for more modern flicks

Thread is getting old, but i thought i'd throw another 2 out there

I was at Office Depot getting some misc stuff and they had a "double feature" DVD with the 1993 mel gibson Maverick (which is what i bought it for) and , the Wild Wild West with-- ahem- Will Smith, the former Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

i watched WWW first and I readilly admit --- it was funny and well worth the 1.5 hours it took to watch it. A bit outlandish, but tongue in cheek, with lots of subtle and less than subtle jokes. The main character is carrying a Mare's Laig at one point and there are some other cool weapons involved as well.

I realize we're talking westerns here but there is a good movie that is very authentic in its use of firearms and a good movie to boot, "The Ghost and the Darkness". Late 1890's(?) set in Africa. Changed my opinion on Lions. One of my favorites when I want something a little different.

I gotta see that one again -- cool flick. Double rifles galore. not necessarilly a western, but i guess you could say Quigley Down Under wasnt either, as it took place in Aus.
