Intro: The 2008 Mossberg .30-30 "Phoenix"

Post by Pete44ru »

It's not on the Mossberg website yet, but the new (Feb-Mar 2008) issue of Petersen's Hunting Magazine has an article on the new 2008 items, amongst which is (ta-raa): The Mossberg Model 464 lever action rifle, a top-eject, .30-30.

Me too, since previous Mossberg centerfire Leverguns were solid-top, side ejecting Marlin look-alikes with triggers that traveled with the lever.

The Hunting Mag blurb said: "The extractor is a forward extension of a collar-type spring that that fits in an angular groove aound the bolt body. Low on the right side is the familiar spring-loaded gate, through which cartridges are fed ino the under-barrel tubular magazine. Weight is 6lb, 11 ounces, Overall length is 38 1/4". "

Why would they make it a top eject?

Do you think it's made in America, or an Italian import?

The name "Phoenix" is interesting, signifying maybe something rising from the ashes, maybe more like a replica old time rifle of some sort. Well, we can wish, cant we??

[The name "Phoenix" is interesting, signifying maybe something rising from the ashes]

The "Phoenix" moniker was my own doing, referring to exactly that - The fact that Mossberg had made a levergun once before, and discontinued it.

The "top eject", etc, sounds good - but (knowing Mossberg's history) I'm awaitin', to see if it looks like a Winchester 94 clone or is their more usual slightly "off"/"different" rifle.

For example: The last Mossberg M472 levers weren't even D/T for peeps, and I don't think they were for scopes, either. (They were side ejectors)

No one, yet - AFAIK. It's prolly a pre-SHOT Show news release, that Hunting Magazine got a line on, since I can't find even word one about it anywhere else yet - even Mossberg's own website.

This looks like a job for Jengel.

Jengel, your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to make sure while at the Shot Show to CHECK OUT THE MOSSBERG display and to report back ASAP :)

Not only did the trigger swing with the lever, they also had the buttstock attached with a through bolt..Not a bad feature by today's standards..but weird back in the day..

I have a Mossberg 472 straight grip .30-.30.
It is drilled and tapped for a top mount scope, the 4 factory screws are still in it.
The trigger does travel with the lever
