Need a little 32-20 jacketed load data

Post by jdad »

Just for fun I bought some Sierra 90gr JSHP bullets. I've been using 115gr Laser Cast bullets, on top of 9.5gr of 2400. I can find load data for 85gr jacketed and 100gr jacketed, but not the 90gr jacketed. I have an old Speer and Hornady book.

Would it be safe to start at 9.0 or 9.5gr of 2400? I want to work up an accurate silhouette load, not a super fast, rocket speed, hunting load.
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Lyman lists 7.6 grains of 2400 up to maximum of 8.5 grains for a 90 grain jacketed bullet, 773-943 fps in 6-1/2" barrel. They put 3.6 to 4.8 grains of Unique as their most accurage load at 639-844 fps.

Lee doesn't list either of those powders, but has Accurate 5744 8.7 - 9.7 grains for 846-920 fps from revolvers.

Both of these sources I have list these as for 'modern', non-blackpowder, guns only.

my favorite loads come from lyman 44 book (old)
max for 100gr
2400 11.5 = 1700fps<>
imr 4227 15gr = 1980fps<>

max for 80 gr

2400 13gr = 1890fps<>
imr 4227 17gr = 2200fps<>

I think you can split the loads and go from their, but remember these are MAX loads..

I like the old books, some what warmer.. But remember these are hi-speed loads and NOT for revolver...

It is generally understood that you can work with a load for a marginally heavier bullet to make a safe load for a lighter bullet.
If this rule applies to the 32-20, and I dont see why it wouldn't, your 100gr load should be a safe starting load for a 90gr bullet and then work up from there.

There's nothing, but Pyrodex in the entire Portland Metro area. If I happen to find some, at the "normal" price, I will try some.
