I know it's a tradition on WV where my wife is from for the churches to put out a cookbook with everyone's favorite recipes in it. We showed these to a Tagalog friend my wife works with to try to get their Tagalog congregation here to put out something along those lines. So far they haven't done it but we keep hoping. They are some great cooks.

Now for pics of the friday morning wild pigeon hunt !

We were in a small city called Gingoog which is about 90 miles from Cagayan de Oro City .

I went with my GF's brother and his hunting partner .

GF's brother has a Remington 512 that he restocked and put a silencer on . He also has the Simmons Pre Hunter 4-12AO I brought him last year on top ! His partner was using some type of air rifle with a Bushnell scope on top . We hunted from blinds on the edge of a cliff or bluff about 90 feet above sea level and waited for the birds to land in the treetops .

Image

Image

Image

All three of the pics above were taken from one of the blinds while I sat there with GF's brother !

Image

GF's brother with his Remington 512 . He would only shoot Sub Sonic rounds as he wanted as little noise as possible .

Image

GF's brothers hunting partner in his blind with his air rifle !

Image

Image

Success !!!! We saw maybe 20-24 pigeons that morning but were only able to shoot one time ! My GF's brother killed this one from about 35 yards as it sat about 60 feet up in a tree .

They went the following morning and took another man . They shot 4 but only found 3 of them !

Friday evening they had the annual festival in Gingoog and we had pigeon "adobo" as one of the dishes ! Brother had already killed 3 or 4 other birds before I arrived and his wife cooked them all ! She made this dish for me last year when I was here and it was excellent and this time was certainly no different

Actually I tried it last july when I was here !

Also a guy on the plane on the way over last summer told me about it !

All he could say about it was that it tasted like heaven and smelled like s..t !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I had some last year when we put together a "lechon" . I gotta say I like the taste but do not care for the texture of the fruit . It to me is like an over ripe bannana .

I love the seashore pictures. Imagine, warm water. That's a treat. I like those little knives the bird hunting party pack around. Handy for almost everything and always to hand....... old lessons learned long ago...

thanks for the tour!

On thursday morning ten of us went to a beach resort that has a pool and is about an hour from Cagayan de Oro City . It is also kind of up the hill from the beach so I was able to get a couple okay pics of the ocean ! Well I think okay as my picture taking ability is somewhat limited to say the least !

Image

I stayed in the pool about 2-3 hours thursday and friday I looked like a very large LOBSTER !

Image

Three of "my" nieces from left aged 25 , 14 and 26 !

Image

The resort .

Image

Image

Getting ready for lunch ! We took fresh talapia , squid and pork to grill with us as well as rice and fresh ripe pineapple !

Image

View from the upper deck of the 3 level pool ! First pool that said 7 FEET on the side and I stood flatfooted and the water just reached my chin ! And I'm supposed to be 5'10" !!! Must have grown some since I've been here !

Okay here are some ocean pics from the top of the hill behind the resort !

Image

Image

Up top while I was taking pics are left to right , GF's sister in law , GF and then GF's oldest sister .

Image

I call these things Carp and they look on them as we would a goldfish ! But some of these bad boys were nearly 30 inches !

Image

The guy that owned the resort must be a cockfighter . He had about 30 roosters stacked out on the hillside behind the reort beside his home ! Which reminds me I need to go to the cockfight here in CDO this sunday or next sunday and perhaps take 2000-3000 Pesos to bet ! But take it easy thats only about 40-60 US dollars

You are having too much fun. The US Government will surely outlaw trips like this - or tax them. We're not allowed to have fun anymore.

Haven't been anywhere special lately .

However may be going to see a couple pineapple and mango plantations in the next week or so !

Also next sunday I will most likely attend the "cockfight" might even do a little wagering myself this time !

I bought a magazine here the other day called "Cockfighters" there was something in there about it being made illegal in the USA in 2008 to cockfight ANYWHERE in the USA ! I had assumed it had been that way for a number of years .

Going to the 5 o'clock Mass today at GF's mother's church ! Make a family outing of it ! Will take GF , her mom , sis and nephew !

Hope they don't spill the Holy Water on me I could blaze up

Yes I know exactly what you mean !

We here in the USA may have more money and or stuff ! But these folks can show you what the true meaning of happiness is without all the monetary stuff !

Nice pics. Looks like a fun time.

I don't swim in the ocean. No trees to climb.

The one thing I find odd about the Phillipines is Asians speaking Spanish. It's like finding a Mexican that speaks Russian. I know why, it just seems odd.

Filipinos don't speak Spanish. They have 165 languages of their own. Some of the major dialects such as Visayan and Tagalog absorbed many Spanish words, often with distinct spellings and pronunciations, during the peiod of Spanish colinization just as we have adapted many foreign words (Spanish, French, Italian, Yiddish) but the Filipino languages and their grammar are quite distinct.

My wife and I recently sponsored a niece's marriage in Manila where the future in-laws could not understand each other and everything depended on interpreters.

My GF's family speaks "Visayan" .

We were watching some local TV program that was spoken in another dialect and they all made fun of how funny the other dialect sounded compared to theirs .

But I'm sure the people from that dialect would feel the same when they heard Visayan

GF's brother gave me a nice set of Philippine Sambar antlers the day I arrived as a gift ! He also invited me to go pigeon hunting with him and his partner .

So the second week here GF and I took the bus to her bro's town for a couple days and I went hunting with bro and his buddy . This was also the weekend of their town festival . So after the hunt saturday morning and a noon rest we prepared for the feast that evening . Bro's buddy returned later to eat lunch with us and brought me another nice set of Sambar antlers as a gift .

I sent both sets back to the USA on may 29 or 30 . Recieved an email from my friend the gunsmith that they had arrived in good shape at his shop yesterday ! I sent them air express at a cost of about $75 ! But thats okay since they arrived in one piece !

Will post pics when I get home in a couple weeks !

I have this thing abour "Carabao" and am always looking for them when we drive thru the provinces . I've wanted some pictures of them as well but usually I am on a bus running about 60 MPH and it's kinda hard to get a good pic with a digi cam !

But on the way back sunday the driver took me by a place where the guy breeds "Carabao" for resale here and in Manila .

Image

For those who do not know the "Carabao" it is pretty much a domesticated Asiatic Water Buffalo . They use them for plowing mostly and sometimes as draft animals . They serve the same purpose as the oxen did in the United States back in the 1700's and 1800's .

Wednesday night 6-24 we went to a Korean Resteraunt !

Myself my GF , her younger sister and her younger sisters coworker went !

Image

We had some kind of Korean seafood soup had lots of squid , shrimp , noodles and was kinda spicey ! Stuff was great and would open your sinuses right up !

We also had Korean barbecue with beef and chicken as well as a pork dish that I'd never tried before and cannot remmember the name of !

And last but not least I had them bring out a bottle of Soju for the ladies to try !

Here are my GF's sister on the right and her coworker ! Note the bottle of Soju in her hand !

My GF and me with my mouth stuffed full of barbecue !

On a side note !

They have KFC there and believe it or not the chicken tastes the same as at home !
They also have McDonalds and the Big Mac and Quarter Pounders taste the same as at home also !
Gotta say the McDonalds I went in had fries as good as any I ever had in the USA !

We also go to this place called "Yellow Cab" it's a pizza place . They have some of the best pizza I have ever tasted !

GF and I went out to dinner tuesday night at a place called "Max's" this I learn is a chain kinda like Denny's in the USA I suppose . Anyway "max's" specialty is fried chicken . Let me tell you it reminded me of the chicken mt great grandmother used to cook !
Didn't take any pics that night but I'm going back friday night with GF , her daughter and her nephew so hopefully we can get some pics !

It was one of those deals where I wanted to come home but at the same time I didn't want to leave my GF and her daughter !

yep, Smell-A-X is in the Sheeples Republic and doesn't really count as American soil .... when you landed there you were a scant 32 miles from where I exist here in the antpile.

hope you'll be able to find some San Miguel Dark and relive the fine memories of the trip.

Cheers,

Carl

Sorry didn't mean to offend !

The GD customs guys upset me off though !
Pulled me aside and emptied my suitcase and PC case !

Next time I go I'm gonna fly Korean airlines and go straight from Dullus to Seoul and then to Manila ! Stay the heck away from the airports in SF and LA !
