32-20 and Lil'gun in the '06 '92 Update 7-9-09

Post by Tycer »

I loaded some 115 grain Lyman cast GC bullets over 10.5 grains of 2400 which is 1/2 grain under max. They printed 3.5" higher than the Rem High Speed half jackets. They grouped about 2" at 25 yards freehand. The same diameter Magnus 118 grain plain base grouped about 8 1/2 x 11. The old Rem half jackets grouped about 2.5". I loaded several loads of Lil'Gun under the both bullets and found 8 grains under the Lyman bullet grouped less than half an inch with one called flyer and printed in the same place as the Rems. Three of the five were in the same hole. I think I found the load. Starline brass, WSP primer, Lee FCD. Oh, the new production Win silver box won't stay on a two foot square. I'll pull the bullets and seat the Lymans on there over some LG.

The bore is .311" and pitted near the breech with strong rifling the rest of the way. The Lymans and Magnus are .313". The Win factory loads are .312".

UPDATE 7-9-09

I took the rifle to the range today and the 8 grains still does great. Chronys out at 1250, 100fps more than the old Rem High-Speeds. I tried upping the charge .2gr at a time to 8.6, but the groups got larger each time. I guess if I want zippy, I'll have to switch to 2400.

I stretched it out to our range max of 135 yards on a piece of stainless and upped the Lyman one notch and took five shots a the bull on a Ram.

A 4.5" group at 135 with iron sights. I'm very pleased!!!!! I'm looking forward to spending some time learning the elevation marks at different distances.

Keep us posted. I'm hoping to make my 1889 more of a shooter this year, and it is pitted as well. When I do some loads, I'll post results as well.

.32-20 is a nice round!

I understand the Starline brass is a bit thicker and lasts a bit longer. Congrats on finding the right load!!! :D

Thanks. Ya know, the Starline is the same thickness at the case mouth as the Rem, and the Win is thinner. Won't know about the web area and have not measured water capacity.

I'd be very happy with that from a 100 year old rifle. 8)
