Camper fends off mountain lion with chain saw

Granted, he didn't have time to pull a sidearm even if he had had one, but still...

A week ago the wife and I along with one of the daughters and her husband went camping in the Cascade mountains. Saw a mulie doe, a three point and six point buck just across the Cooper river at Salmon La Sac Campground. If they're there it's more than likely there's mountain lions around too. I always pack in the woods and carry a sizeable knife.

Have seen lion tracks in the area where the attack occured. Several different cats in the Sweetwater, Clearwater, Elk Fork & Pagoda Creek drainages, just to name a few of the ones I frequent most.

Wolves & bears in there too...

I NEVER go there unarmed. NEVER...

He was lucky -- and quick.

Buck

We've had on running the canyons behind my place for over a year now. When it first showed up, the animal control folks didn't believe the residents until they showed them the still photos and video. They tried to track it the next day and couldn't, no big surprise, I doubt if any of them actually knew how to track. Gave up and spread the word that it must have been someone's "illegal" pet that just went home. Funny thing, is fluffy and scruffy keep disappearing. But there's no cat. Sure.

I'm one of the lucky few in this state to ccw. So, when I walk in the canyons I usually have a heavily loaded .45 Blackhawk. Most of the parents have forbid their kids from going into the canyons. Like that's gonna work. I'm afraid at some point, a youngster is going to cross paths with it. But, so far, it seems to do it wandering and eating at night. I've thought about seeing if I could ambush it some evening, but it would be real hard to explain what I was doing with a 45-70 and a electronic predator call if I got caught.

It was that fact, more than the chainsaw, that prevented further injury...

Like I said before: he was lucky -- and he was QUICK...

FWIW: Am leaving tomorrow to spend a couple days with a local BSA troop, in the Kirwin area, known to be frequented by bears -- large & not-so-large, and mt. lions as well -- not to mention wolves. BSA rules notwithstanding, I'm taking my pyrotechnically-enhanced bear repellent: a 12-ga. double and an '86 XLR. A .45 Colt Vaquero may hitch a ride too, just to be comfortable...

ANYONE who ventures into these environs unarmed, or requires others to do so, is the most arrogant kind of fool...

Just my two-bits worth.

Buck

Never was a boy scout, but I seem to remember some kids getting a merit badge in marksmanship when I was a kid.
