OT: My Ruger.22 New Vaquero SA Revolver-UPDATED/Range Report

They're "Cowboy Action" practice .45 Colt chamber inserts, chambered & rifled for .22LR - which I just received last nite from The Sportsman's Guide.



I intend to range test them soon, and will report on how they do.

Are those the ones with little o-rings on them to keep them in place?

I've seen something like them before and was very curious. I've wondered how they would work and what kind of accuracy if any they'd provide.

So ... I'm gona keep my eyes open for your report too.

There doesn't seem to be any barrel insert? If the .22 bullets are being discharged into the .45 barrel, they will have no accuracy at all - they'll just bounce down the barrel and make a pattern at 5 yards. But, that may be good enough to hit a big gong close-in....

He said they were chambered & rifled, so you would have overall lenth of insert, minus length of .22L.R. = remainder of rifled barrel.

No "bounce down the barrel" at all. there would be NO contact between the .22 bullet and the barrel.

The .22 chamber is offset in the adapter. So no matter where the cartridge is oriented the firing pin will hit the center of the adapter and therefore the rim of the .22.

I think that for as much consistency as possible you should orient all the adapters the same though. If they'll stay put.

I'll try to resolve some questions, except for the shooting - as I'm not going to be able to get to my club for a few days.

The forward portion of the inserts are bored to .22 cal & rifled - and result in a barrel only slightly shorter than the 1" bbl on a NAA Mini revolver.
So, no bounce - the bullets are not thrown downbore.
Instead, think: Shooting a .22 down the center of a 4" long piece of sewer pipe.

They don't have any O-rings ( or onion rings, either ) - but are a nice/snug fit in the chambers.
So snug, that when I want to go back to shooting .45 Colt cartridges, I have to start the inserts out of each chamber by slightly offsetting it, and tapping the insert with the EJ rod.

There's NO alignment effort needed, with the revolver's firing pin, since (if you'll look carefully) the .22 chamber is reamed where, no matter how the insert is oriented, a portion of a .22's rim will always lie central in the .45 chamber.

That said, there's not much orienting to be done, since the EJ rod must be able to eject the rimfire casing, leaving the insert chambered.
The installation instructions say to hold the EJ rod all the way to the rear while chambering the insert, to ensure it's properly positioned.

As can be gathered easily from the photos & description, a barrel insert would be worse than useless...

I took my NV to the range today, and shot it @ 7yds (21') with the recommended standard velocity ammo - I had CCI plain lead RN bullets on hand.



I guess it's about what I expected - a beer can can plinking and/or trigger time practice accessory - except that I found it curious that some hits were cutting wads, while others obviously keyholed.

I didn't take the time to see if a specific insert or two were the only ones doing the keyholeing, or if they were all randomly keyholeing shots.
A project for another day, and a notebook, after the inserts are marked & numbered so I can tell who's on first.

For their intended use, CAS practice, where yer shooting a pretty big plate fairly close, they sound great. Many CAS shooters have backed off on practice due to cost and scarcity of ammo/components of late. what with primers in the neighborhood of 40 bucks a thousand, ya sure can save money if ya use em. They will NOt give ya the same experience as normal loads, but will give ya trigger time and the feedback of live fire.
