New Marlin joins the herd
This is a .44 Mag - I found it at my local fun shop and made a trade for a refinished (wood) Remington m81 in 300 Savage.
I've been wanting a .44 Marlin and the Remington, while interesting wasn't my favorite, so....
Here it is:
Bore is excellent and when I cleaned it, it was full of gunk - like it'd never been cleaned. Based on the looks of the receiver area, I'd say it was shot once or twice and put away and knocked around in a closet for about 19 years (I checked the serial and its a 1990 production year ).
I'm really looking forward to taking her to the range - this makes my third pistol caliber Marlin (.357, 45 Colt and this).
I may take a draw knife to the handguard... I really prefer the slender type found on the cowboy models. Anybody else do that with their fat handguard Marlin? Got a pic?
Oh, and this will likely get an XS sight too...

Gunsmith did this for me when I got mine parkerized to compensate for storage-rust while I was away in college.

O.S.O.K., Good looking rifle. One of my nephews has one, not in near as nice condition as that one, that I keep trying to get away for him. They do seem to me to recoil out of proportion. In other words his kicks like a mule.

Re: New Marlin joins the herd
Nice 44. Same as my first lever-gun. (I got to keep it because I killed my first deer with it.)
Mine has a Leopold 3-9x50 on it. (I like scopes for deer hunting.) Some people don't like scopes on Marlins, but I love it and it looks great on it.
Sorry, I don't have any pics on my computer.

I'll try to do that here next week; if I forget, PM me a slap upside the head to remind me...mescalero1 wrote:AJMD429,

Re: New Marlin joins the herd
Congrats! Now the question is, do you have a .44 Magnum revolver to mate with that fine Marlin?

Re: New Marlin joins the herd
I finally bought the same gun about 2 years ago now, but up until then I naively thought of a .44 rifle such as this as a useless toy. I shot a factory round the day I got it, I think my shoulder is still smarting, unbelieveable power and a fine little gun to hunt with and use for targets. Looks like a nice one you got too.
To hell with them fellas, buzzards gotta eat same as the worms.

Re: New Marlin joins the herd
Ricky, I have a Marlin 94 cowboy in 45 Colt that I've shot hot loads out of. That kicked some - maybe about like a .243 Winchester. I figure the .44 Mag Marlin will be about the same?
That's one of the reasons that I wanted the Marlin I have a hunter version too - but this is much more the "companion" holster gun.
Here's the hunter since I'm on a picture posting roll here
And then there's this:
Ruger New Blackhawk or this:
S&W 696...
.44 Specials - if I decide to go a little lighter

I've got XS Sights on my '94 Marlin in .44. Massive difference in sight acquisition speed...

Oh yeah, they are really nice. I've got one on my 95 Marlin in 45-70 right now and they are very quick and give good accuracy too. Maybe not like a small aperture tang sight, but those are pretty useless for hunting IMHO.MrMurphy wrote:I've got XS Sights on my '94 Marlin in .44. Massive difference in sight acquisition speed...

Jac, XS makes a threaded ghost ring that will accept Williams peeps. I have one on my 45 Colt Winchester, I bought it from Brownells.O.S.O.K. wrote:Oh yeah, they are really nice. I tried that Ricky - but the darned thing couldn't take them without them being turnded down so that they wouldn't bump into the base and prevent adjustment down far enough....

Yeah, the skinner sights look great - the only thing that keeps me from going with them is that they look a little higher off of the receiver than the xs sights.claybob86 wrote:I recently put a Skinner receiver peep on mine and I REALLY like it!

What most people call a "right" is the equivalent of a dog walking on a leash. Just because your leash is a little longer than the other dogs' does not mean you don't have a master.
