What are you going to deer hunt with?

Post by jjh501 »

Hunting season is just around the corner. Anybody going to use an old lever action this year, and, if so what are you going to shoot?
I'll be using an 86 winchester 45-90 (1892 vintage). If I get one with it I'll use a Winchester 71 I bought last year for the second.

It all depends on where and what the weather throws at me. Dirty wet, sneak in the swamps weather a circa 1942 mod 94 30 wcf, cold open hard woods cruising type day Savage mod 99 in 300 savage with a 1.5 x4.5 scope, not sure what it will do a mod 94 BB 356win with a Williams FP sight. If I'm in a black powder zone a Traditions inline 50 cal.

Probably the first deer will get hammered by the 40-72..still not sure for the second...it could be an 1873 in 38-40 or the 1895 in .303 B. Although the 40-82 is crying in the safe cause it wants more time in the field......

Alas, it won't be with a lever gun, for various reasons. I'll be taking my new/used Ruger 77RSI .243 to the woods this season. Equipped with a 2x scope, it'll be perfect for those early morning and twilight hunts. I've been having problems lately seeing the iron sights on my Browning 95 and I loaned out my Marlin 336 to my dad. So it's a bolt gun this year.

Maybe when it cools off enough for the bucks to move around during the day, I might haul the ol' Browning back out...

No center fire rifle hunting in IL. Were I to be someplace I could hunt deer with a real rifle I'd use either my 1950 Mdl 94 Carbine or my 1980 Mdl 94 Trapper, both in 30-30.
Except were I in IN I'd use my Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .45 Colt.

I have no desire to carry anything with a scope on it or anything heavier than the Mdl 94s.

Kind of depends on the weather for me too. If it's not raining or snowing I'm going to tote the 470NE  . Other than that it'll likely be the Marlin 1894 44 Mag. There is one stand that I may hunt some where a looooong shot would be very probable, in which case I'll have the 338 WM.

I'll likely carry my Marlin Texan 30-30 with Williams FP receiver sight as my still hunting rifle and my Savage 99F 300 Sav topped with a Leupold 2-7X as my stand rifle. Those two should cover about anything I could encounter in TN or AL.

For me, first up is my state's black-powder-only season, where a .54 gets the nod.

After that, I'm off to Maine, where I'll use several guns as the days pass - This year I plan on using:
My .357 Rossi M92 "Monday" gun,
my .45 Rossi M92 "Tuesday" gun,
my .30-30 Win 94 Trapper "Wed" gun,
my 6.5x55 M70 FW "Thursday" gun,
my .-30-06 Ruger #1RSI "Friday" gun, and then finally
my .44 Marlin 1894P "Sat" gun.

Then, back to my state for the shotgun-only season, where I'll use my 20ga Ithaca Deerslayer.

In the early part of NY's NZ season, a 1950-vintage M94 in (what else?) .30-30.

In the late part (Thanksgiving on) of NY's NZ season, a Remington Model 7 in .308 Winchester. If, and that's a big if, I can get a Marlin 1895, that's what will be being used in the "second half."

Muzzleloader season - Savage ML-10 (probably with SR 4759 & saboted 45 cal bullet).

Regular gun season - Normal days - 44 Magnum - Ruger 96/44, scoped.
Regular gun season - Rainy days - 44 Magnum - Ruger 77/44, NECG aperture sight.
After the first deer, may 'blood' the 44 Magnum - Marlin 1894-SS.

Bow season - a "44MagHunter"... :?

The nice thing about the Ruger levergun vs. the Marlin is it is easier to load and unload quickly if crossing the road (divides our hunting area) and upon coming inside. The 77/44 is so much easier to dry off after it gets soaked vs. having to take the forend off the 1894-SS, as well.

(...plus - I haven't gotten a deer with the 96/44 yet, and the other guns are making fun of it... )

My dad's Model 94 (Win 30-30 of course) will get the sentimental pick at least for the first weekend --- if my model 94 Marlin ever gets out of the shop (Marlin Jam) -- it will get a turn on the playing field too --- with jacketed bullets , it is more accurate than the Winnie out to its "drop-off point"

I will be using my Lyman GPR .50 rifle with patched round ball and my Marlin 336 30-30. My daughter will be using a Marlin 1895 .44 mag with a handloaded reduced recoil load that pushes a 200 grn LSWC bullet at approx. 1700 fps.

I use more than one gun during the season based on type of hunting and weather. But when I get a deer I retire that gun and get another.

Start the season with my new 338MX
Use my 32 special wrangler for still hunting
38-55 Win with my homecast bullets.
Marlin 32-20 if I can get a doe within 50 yards
Just put a scout mount on my 30-30 Win
Also got a redfield peep for the Krag carbine

It's nice to have options !

Gonna use the little 16" Marlin in Cowboy .45 Special. My 15 yr old wants to carry the 24" version of the same gun.

Brewed up a load at 1400 fps with Power Pistol and a 230 XTP.

Gotta get a deer with my own round, don't ya know ;)

I always wondered if I was alone packing so much iron in the truck with me :)
I usually don't have one for any particular day, but tend to favor my lighter and sling equipped ones in the afternoon. What I'll be packing over a week or so this year :

1894 Marlin 44 Magnum Sporter (with sling, afternoon and rain gun)
1886 Win 33 Win
Savage 99 EG 300 Savage
1909 Mannlicher Schoenauer 375 Rimless NE (with sling, afternoon gun)
Rem M-8 32 Remington

I use cast bullets in all except the 1894 Marlin.

I envy you guys with near unlimited choice. Here in Illinois, no centerfire rifles of any kind for deer. I'll use a 62# longbow for the most part, when it comes to firearm season, my choice will be either a .54cal muzzleloader or .44mag three screw Ruger Flattop.

Deer are going to get this:

Image

Its a 356 Win chambered Marlin 336 - conversion from 35 Rem. I'm going to use a cast boolit load: 40 grains of W748 under a Saeco 250 gas check boolit going about 2000 fps.

I'm going to apply my Marlin 94 44mag to the hogs after deer season :)

Kentucky season--- I'll have the 308 me in the XLR and the 1895 winchester in 30-06 along with a remington 700 bolt in 308. I tend to use a different gun every day so they all are happy. thinking about taking the 50 alaskan too, even though its a bit hard on deer :D

I know it's a major "sin", but when we go on our Northern CA trophy hunt in November I'm gonna be using this old Remington 700 BDL that I bought new in 1964. It now sports a camo stock and detachable box mag, but is still the same dependable .30-06. I'll take along the old '95 Winchester in the same caliber, just to have a lever with me. Most of the shots up in that country are long ones, so the bolt gun with the Swarovski 3X12 will see the brunt of the hoped for action. :) Image

Until it rains? Weather has never bothered any of my 1886s. They most assuredly were not made for use only in sunny and mild weather. I have parked 'em against trees in freezing snow, dragged them through water and mud, and fried 'em in the sun, but they still look as good as the day they arrived here. A little apré-hunt care is all they need to keep on working. 8)

These two are just a couple of rifles that have "been there and done that". I took the 71 to CO for last years elk hunt and it got so cold that the leather sling froze and the action got stiff. I had to put 'er in the PU to warm up, both me and the gun. As you can see, she still looks nearly perfect. :D Image

Good evening to ya all,
like many others here, just ended the CA coast season. The "inland" season begins this weekend.
The rifles of choice are/were the same for both:

This 'un (1895 Cowboy, 45-70)

and that 'n (Puma big loop carbine, 357)

Both have been plenty sucessfull.

Happy huntin' to ya all this year,

Hello oklahoma red, and welcome to the forum. Nice pics! I believe on another thread you stated that that was a Ram Line stock on your .357 Rossi. Can you tell us about that? At least one forum member had difficulty installing the Ram Line for a Win. 94 onto his Rossi 92. He said it needed a lot of fitting mods. Are they making one for the 92 now? Thanks.

Bow season: Wes Wallace take down bamboo longbow, 64# at my draw length.
Early Muzzle loader doe: Brad Emig .54 Cal Virginia Rifle Flintlock, pushing a .530 patched ball over 100 gr of ffg.
General season, Buck/Doe: original 1886 in 45-70, NKJ '92 in .357 (rainy days), or Chapius 9.3x74R, and .475 linebaugh FA custom pistol.
Late Bow and Muzzle loader: same as above.

I have three tags for this season, and I hope to be more intentional in trying to fill those tags.

Good evening to ya Slimster,
Thank you for the kind words, and the welcome.
The Ramline did take a little work to get it to fit:
the forend barrel channel had to be opened up to fit
and the stock was too tight on the rear of the action, top and bottom, took some releaving.

I still have a little gap at the top edges on each side of the stock, near the side of the action. I will fill that with some black plastic welding compond (I have used it before on another Ramline stock, it's used for repairing black plastic "Poop" tanks on RVs). This will wait till after season (nothin' I've shot with it has noticed the gap yet!).

It really did go together pretty well. Maybe the newer little carbines measure differently than the older, full size, Rossi's??

Mike D I know it doesn't make sense but I waited 28 years to get an original 1886 and I don't want to even think about messing it up where I hunt in the rain. I KNOW THIS GUN HAS BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT AND IT SHOWS, but I don't want to add to the character of it just yet, especially when I have 3 gun cabinets of stuff that can go out in the snot. I truly hope in the next couple of years to be able to trade this and some cash for the gun I really wanted a 86 in 45-70 with the octagon barrel but this came up and I took it. Tom

Well since the massive ice storm we had last year my hunting grounds look like they've been carpet bombed. :( There's a huge amount of downed timber and visibility is shot so I wanta' anchor them absolutely, positively where they stand. During ML season I'll use my .50 Lyman plains rifle (only ML I own) and during rifle season the new to me Marlin .45-70 with Hornaday 350 gr. HP's ought to be just the ticket.

Once again no one mentioned the 40-65 so I will. This year in Montana one has the potential
to get (IIRC) 11 Deer tags only one of course being a buck tag. I will be starting with a Rugar M77 257 Roberts Ackley Improved and then the 40-65 will be taking up the slack.
Someone has to do it.
I cannot understand the Fish and Game Dept. in this state. Some places I hunt it is common to see hundreds, yes hundreds of shootable deer yet there will be restricted tags in that area with other near barren areas with multiple tags avaliable.

:( :( unfortunately, I won't. But... if I were, it'd be my handbuilt, custom Winchester 94 in .30-30.

.
I'll be using my Mathews Drenalin from next week until Muzzleloading season.

Then I'm going to use my LH .40 flintlock for about 10 days.

Then when rifle season rolls I'm going switch between my 336 in .35 Remington

And my 1894 with the homemade large loop lever complete with trigger stop....
