CA Blacktail vs. Browning 1895 30-40 Krag (with pic!)
Heavy rain and wind got the deer moving, so I took the day off work and went hunting with my Browning 1895 .30-40 Krag. I recently installed one of the Providence Tool Company Lyman 21 rear sights. I really like it!
Since I hunt public land I don't turn one down just because he's small. This little guy will be better eating than veal!

Nice shooting Shasta. Good to see someone around here filling their tag!! I'll be somewhat up your way come October 24th when the G-1 hunt opens up.
Dang...that there rifle of yours looks pretty familiar. I must own it's twin...down to the Providence sight.
Cementhead...you wanted to know about a load for the 30-40....Here's mine...
Remington brass, TTL - 2.294"
Remington 9.5 primer
41.7gr IMR 4064 under a 165gr Sierra spitzer.
Chugs along right around 2200fps if memory serves me...which it usually doesn't.
Sorry...didn't mean to highjack the thread.

Beautiful rifle. I'm glad you're using it the way it was intended , to get game!
I was at the range yesterday sighting in my new to me Browning BLR, when I noticed this guy next to me shooting a 95. Since I am a 95 fan and owner also I started a comversation with him. The rifle was in a good shape as your Browning. Fully blued nice wood very littler use marks. I asked him if it was a Browning and he sain no its a winchester. I took a look at it , it had a slab sided reciever and the squared of magazine. This was a first run original winchester # 79, in .30-40 Krag. I was floored the gun was not fancy it was beautiful. He said he taked it out and shoots it once every 10 years or so. I was just floored. What a treat to actually see this work of art up close and personal.
A 95 is my favorite Winchester.

Where did you get that barrel band? I need one for my Brownchester 95. Congradulations on the good hunt.

Re: CA Blacktail vs. Browning 1895 30-40 Krag (with pic!)
That's a nice deer Tim. I'm with you about hunting on public land. It doesn't pay to let a smallish one go as you might not see another one for a week. He's a pretty good size and will feed ya for some time to come. Very nice rifle too.
Re: CA Blacktail vs. Browning 1895 30-40 Krag (with pic!)
Nice little buck, Tim! I only saw one buck with a 2X3 rack during the early season and let him slide because we thought that the bigger ones would show later in the season. They didn't, so I lost out. Oh well, that's huntin'.
Next week, we're headin' up to eastern Tehama to hunt the G1 zone. Hopefully, some nice bucks will show, especially after this small storm and the impending showers early next week. I'm excited. As far as I am concerned, the sun can stay out for the week that we will be huntin' that lava strewn mountain. We'll have a big wall tent and a shack to cook in, so, no matter, it will all be good. I'm taking by Remington .30-06 bolt gun and a .33 WCF '86. All bases will be covered.

Re: CA Blacktail vs. Browning 1895 30-40 Krag (with pic!)
In response to the inquiries:
mod71alaska- The Providence sight was purchased from Buffalo Arms for $125. It comes complete with a drill bit, a thread tap, and precise instructions for installing the sight. The only complication was having to take the rifle apart before drilling the hole, and then getting it back together. It wasn't too difficult once I figured out how to position that darn carrier spring for reassembly.
CEMENTHEAD- The load I use for my Browning .30-40 Krag is Winchester case, 45.0 grs. IMR 4350 powder, CCI 200 primer, and a Remington 180 gr. softpoint. Average velocity on my chronograph is 2,392 fps.
Charles- Buck Elliot is right, the barrel band is from Uncle Mike's. It does not fit as tight as I would like, but does the job.
Nath- Not much to brag on about the shot. It was on a very steep hillside with the buck broadside about 40 yards uphill from me. The bullet caught him just behind the left shoulder lower in the chest and exited the upper chest on the right side. You can see the exit wound in the picture. He reacted with a huge jump and kicked out his back legs, so I knew he was hit hard. He ran uphill away from me but only made it about 10 yards before dropping dead. The best part was I had only been hunting about 10 minutes when I saw him!
