94 Predecessors and the 30/30?

Post by L_Kilkenny »

I was wondering if any of the predecessors to the Win 94 were sold in the .30 wcf? Heck, I don't even know if any of them continued to see production after the 94. Don't know why I was wondering but I can't recall ever seeing any of them.

LK

BTW, the predecessors don't have to be limited to winchester firarms.

Nope the 30-30 was the first smokeless cartridge the 94 was chambered in. The year before it was chambered in 38-55 and 32-40.

The 30 WCF (30/30) was first chambered in the M.94 Winchester.

His question I believe is where the 1886 or similar predecessors to the 1894 ever chambered in the 30 W.C.F. after it came out - and I think the answer is still no, unless you count the 1881, but I this is a single shot - not a lever.

They did have an experimental 30 for the 86, but it was never released due to problems with it.

Yes, that was my question. And yes, I was curious about other actions and manufactures including single shots.

If this was the original question, then yes, there was, the 1893 Marlin at least.

Yep. If ya ever stumble into one, don't let it get away. They were rather rare.

Yes Marlin had the 1893 and savage had the 1899, and remington did some rolling blocks, and and and.,
BUT the 30wcf ( nowdays commonly called the 30-30) was introduced by winchester in 1895, in the then new model 1894.

So as I said before nope there was no rifles available for the cartridge before the 1894 winchester.

Don, I thought we were by all of this. Of coarse the Win 94 was the first gun chambered in the 30/30. I think even my teenage kids know that. Like I said, I don't know what the production range of rifles like the 1886, the sharps, etc was. If they continued production AFTER 1894/1895, were any predecessors ever chambered in the 30/30? Did I state the question better for you that time?

BTW, I always forget about the remington falling blocks.

The 1885's were and I would imagine remington would have put some rollers together in it,but probably few if any because the 30 Rem was Remingtons answer to the 30-30.Marlin did the 1893,but it's intro is so close to the 94 not sure it would qualify as a predecessor. Same with the Savage 95.
The Sharps co itself was long gone 15 years before the Winchester 94 saw the light of day.
So now that you have clarified your question..... finally

FWIW, before Remington "invented" their "own 30/30". they sold the Remington-Lee bolt rifle in 30/30(among several other chamberings).. Apparently not a lot of them, though, as I'm owning the only one I've ever seen offered for sale or on display.. Nate

To be honest - or accurate - I think the N0. 5 rolling block action really is later than the Winchester. I believe it was introduced around the end of the century with improved metallurgy and a firing pin designed for "high pressure" cartridges like the 7mm Mauser. The 1885 Winchester and the 1893 Marlin probably are the only designs that truly predate the Winchester. Remington's adaptation of Lee's design was intoduced in 1899. Natedontgo's gun must be super rare, as most of them were chambered for the .30-40 Krag.

OY vey! I'm in the midst of a #5 rolling block build right now, and yes it was a 1901 patent, but the main difference between the #1 (1867 design) and the #5 is the use of steel instead of what we would today call wrought iron for the receiver. Dimensions are the same to the point where they can wear each others stocks.

The 30wcf #5 rollers were made on SMALL MILITARY contracts for a couple of countries already using the 30WCF (presumably in 94s), thus having a supply chain established, as well as VERY FEW sporting rifles.

The #5 was also made in .303 as well as 7X57 (rimless) Most found today were 7X57s, which can be identified by a spring-loaded rotary extractor for the rimless case. The 303 or 30wcf would have a "hard" rotary extractor that isn't spring loaded. They are quite rare.
