I suppose if I had no other option, I'd try a frontal head shot if I were using the right firearm (a lateral shot has too many places that cause slow-death wounds), but NOT with any kind of arrow...Yikes...!

That poor creature.

Some careless boob needs their butt kicked.

Just a thought / question; if you could tranquilize that deer, could that shaft be cut close to the skull and pulled through? If that was successful and antibiotics were used, what would the long term chances of the deer surviving be?

I know it would be much easier to shoot the deer, probably more humane too.
And that would make a good head mount. Great conversation starter.

I am just guessing, but I don't think the animal has a chance. Not a good choice for arrow, or bullet placement. Too many chances for error.

This is on my friend Richard Easley's property in Easleyville, Louisiana. The deer has never been seen in daylight but it likes that feeder at night for some reason. He didn't shoot it but heard around the neighborhood who did, a few miles away in a Wildlife Management Area. It was a crossbow, he said something about a new crossbow season or they are allowed in bow season now, or something like that. I offered to dart it at night at the feeder and try to remove the bolt and inject some antibiotics. Since a lot of people know about this deer he doesn't want me to do it in case something happens that the deer dies or is later killed and identified. LA law is not clear on darting and releasing a whitetail that is "injured" unless we were a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. He saw it last in Nov so it may not be around any longer.

My gut feeling is that someone needs to study up a little more on archery hunting but then again it could of been a fluke, that deer could of swung it's head in the way of the bolt mid flight.
My last shot at a rabbit from my bow was almost there and plum center but that rabbit hopped out of the way with just six inch of arrow flite left!

I've had several does turn to look at me, could have happened with the hunter.

Probably doesn't hurt at all and it's not in her way, since it missed the brain she might live with it.

If it hasn't been seen since Nov. I imagine that it probably succumbed to infection.

I was hunting at WMA a few years ago when a guy showed up at the check station with a little hog that he had shot through the head and dropped in it's tracks. He said you know if I had meant to shoot it like that it would have been one thing but I was going for a neck shot from my stand when it raised it's head. After looking at it the angle he described wold have gone through the neck and into the heart. But for fate...

A few years ago a 12 yr old boy shot his first deer here in Huntington Co. It was a nice doe, when he and his dad went to check her out they got stuck by the point of a broadhead just protruding behind the right eye. Looking closer they found the other end of a broken shaft just sticking out in front of her left ear. A transition clear thru the head and she still walked. The wound had begun to abcess. If the boy had not shot her she probably would have died a slow death from infection.

They might have been aiming for the eyes. Holding the crossbow and the flashlight at the same time might have been too much for them.
