Any Sam Fadala Fans?

Post by nemhed »

I picked up two new books this evening at a discount book store. They had a pretty large selection of gun and sporting books. The two that caught my eye were "Rifle Guide" copyright 1993 and "Legendary Sporting Rifles" copyright 1992, by by Sam Fadala. I'm pretty fond of his work. He seems to have a larger dose of common sense and practical knowledge than a lot of the current gun writers. Plus he seems to be more multidimensional (muzzleloaders, archery, and cartridge guns) than any other writer that I can think of. Anyone else a "Sam Fan"?

Yes I am. His books are always good reading. His book on the Winchester 94 and 30-30 got me hooked. Of course so did Paco Kelly's "Leverguns an American Heritage".

I have been a Sam Fadala fan for years...excellent writer whose work is far to sparse in the mainstream gun media.

He's a fine writer, and very knowledgeable. I'll tell ya, his book "Winchester's 30-30, Model 94, The Rifle America Loves" is one heck of a lot better read than Renneberg's books on the .30-30.

I don't know if he writes for any magazines at this time. Wish he did.

I generally look with skepticism on most gun writers, but Sam Fadala wrote an excellent book on the 30-30 Winchester, Model 94. Another (living) gunwriter whose work that I enjoy is Mike Venturino.

I bought my first Fadala book when I got into muzzleloaders. As I've discovered, Sam has published books covering a wide range of subjects including Western fiction, traditional archery, wildgame cooking, hunting, wildgame watching, as well as the firearm related books. If there is a more well rounded outdoor/sporting author out there then I don't know who it is. I do know I'm going to pick up a copy of his Win. 94 book.

I think he pretty much freelances; I never see him on the list of staff writers in the mags I read.

Yup, Sam's A-OK in my book!

In fact, it's due to his books that I love the Ruger Old Army...

I remember the story about his loading one up and sticking it in the freezer to test the effect on the loads...

Sure hope he had an understanding bride!

In some magazine articles, he has written some great stuff on using a staff or your pack frame as shooting supports. He wrote one article on his choices for extended treks in the backcountry where he chose a .45 auto, 30-30 with big and small game loads, and a sxs muzzleloader 12ga cut to 14". He went into great reason supporting his choices.

Yup, I'm a fan

The first book of his that I purchased was many years ago. It is the most informative book on muzzleloading I have ever read.

Growing up, my family rarely embraced hunting. In the early 80's it was Sam's books then, that guided me into the sport of Black Powder shooting; which then led to my first ever Deer hunt...using of course a cap and ball rifle. Later on...I acquired a Ruger Old Army, largely as a result of his work.

My taste for levergunnery began long before I came upon his writings, and when his book on the model 94 was published...I quickly acquired one and enjoyed it very much.

In recent years, I've heard rumor of his divorce....and was led to believe that THE RIFLE depicted in the 94 Book, was sold off. A pity on both counts if true.

I hope he is doing well these days.
