Howdy from south Texas
My first post on the forum.
Recently picked up a new Chaparral 1873 in 357 mag., 24" bbl.
Since I already have Smiths, I decided this would be a cheap caliber to shoot. Adding a tang sight and front Beech sight.
I had a question about reloads.
I want to see how far I can throw 130-gr. hard lead without being too hard on the action or barrel.
So I was estimating about 11 gr. of 4227 would push about 1400 fps and still keep the pressure down around 16,000 psi.
With high antimony hard lead, would the slow-burning powder increase lead fouling, or do you think I might get by with the low pressure and hard lead?
My background? While I've been shooting most of my life, it's a rarer activity for me than fly fishing, which I have a bit of a reputation about (in a good way).

Welcome Bulldog. I am from DEEP South Texas just a few miles north of Brownsville. We are not even in the United States down here, that starts at the Border Patrol checkpoint at Sarita and that is a good 80 miles north of me. I think of Bulverde as half way to the North Pole .

Welcome to the forum! There are plenty of Texans here. Greater minds than mine will be along soon to answer your questions. Have fun with that '73, but stay safe!
Re: Howdy from south Texas
Welcome to the forum Bulldog1935. I live North East of the DFW area. By Charles's reconnoitering that would be the North Pole . As far as leading in your barrel, a lot of that would depend on the barrel itself. But a good quality hard cast bullet should hold up to those speeds very well. Not knowing anything about the 73 I wont comment of the load pressures.

Howdy.... right back atcha...
I cant answer you question about what recipe will
lead your barrel...but I would not push the pressures in the
73 repros...that is what I am told....
Hows the hunting down there!

Re: Howdy from south Texas
Welcome to a great bunch of lever gun folks. A lot of us enjoy fly fishing, I am on the White River in the Ozarks of Arkansas.
From what I have read it seems like the 73 is safe with factory ammo. I have a Rossi 92 in .357 and .45 Colt. Nice flock of turkeys too.

Welcome to the fire! Another stating not to push the 1873 repro above factory loads. The toggle-link system is simply not the strongest set-up.
Re: Howdy from south Texas
Any factory equivalent loads should be safe in your gun. As to leading you should slug that bore and ensure your bullets are about .001" over groove diameter. Make certain they carry a good load of lube for that 24" barrel.
Oh, and welcome to the forum.
