Model 92 Metamorphosis - Step 3

Post by Pete44ru »

FWIW - There's NOTHING like "change". (tick-tock, tick-tock) ;)

I bought this new Rossi/Braztech .357 Big Loop 16" carbine last June, like this:

I soon:
added a top-mount Williams 5D-94AE peep and
trashed the lawyer safety, then......

A few weeks ago, I swapped the big loop lever for a standard lever.

I got this look about 5 mins after I got the lever:

Shortly afterward, I ordered a rifle forend nosecap (etc), shortened the mag tube to a button mag, shortened/cut the forend to 7 3/8" OAL (slimming the outside of the front half of the wood to match the new nosecap & refinishing w/Tru-Oil), then inletted the forend wood for the nosecap - and here we are (so far):

Are I done yet ? Hmmmmmmmmm ! ;)

THAT IS PRETTY SLEEK, PETE, AND AS YOU KNOW I DO NOT CARE MUCH FOR TRAPPER LEVERGUNS. THAT ONE LOOKS LIKE IT WOULD BALANCE PERFECTLY; AM I RIGHT ?? AS A MATTER OF FACT IT LOOKS LIKE A MINIATURE M53 TO ME AND THAT WOULD BE DARNED COOL.

Thanks - I like the way it looks, feels, handles & balances...................empty.

I haven't cut down the mag spring yet, so I don't know how it will be with 4-5 cartridges (or however many will fit) up the spout.

No wine, before it's time. :P

I didn't use Rossi parts.

The only new parts, that I ordered, were the nosecap/etc from Midway - but they're all over the web.

I just googled "winchester forend nosecap", and the tenon/screws were listed with it.

Pete,
Like Terry, I'm not much into the "Trapper" thing but yours caught my eye, especially the shortened forend. I know you have some serious hours in that project but like the Chinese say, "Nothing of importance comes without great effort".

Now, take that baby out and blast some lead down it's throat. :D -----------Sixgun

Well, Thank you - but I actually don't have much into it, just a few bucks for parts.

I like to put forth provocative ideas that don't cost much, and that also encourage fellow gunners who aren't machinists/gunsmiths, and can't afford one, either to take on this or similar projects.
I "do stuff" with tools almost any homeowner would (or should) have.

To summarize this project, so far:

*This rifle was issued with the short barrel - so all I hadda do was buy it. ;)
*I swapped an open sight setup for the peep, and installed it myself in less than a half-hour. ( I've gotta be able to do SOMETHING, after diddling guns for 45+ years)
*I swapped the original lever for this one & installed it in a few minutes less than it takes to clean the rifle.
*I DID buy the rifle nosecap/tenon/screws - but cutting the forend & inletting it with a wood chisel only took about 30-45 mins.
*While the wait times, between staining/oiling/finishing the forend took two days, the way I do it - the actual "work time" was less than 5mins over the entire time.
*Ditto cutting the mag tube with a hacksaw - it took longer to layout & measure thrice.
*Filing the dovetail into the bottom of the barrel for the forend cap hanger/tenon took the longest - about an hour, because I wanted to be sure I got it square/true/flat, and aligned with the cap screw holes.
