OT a little: life in the Old West

Post by jnyork »

The Casper, Wyoming newspaper sometimes reprints articles from days gone by. This one appeared this morning, shows you how things were handled back in the day:

NATRONA COUNTY TRIBUNE, 1910

"A shooting affair occurred in Lander yesterday morning, and although no one was hurt it is thought the man who was shot at has not yet quit running. The trouble occurred in a restaurant. ... [A] great many people were in the dining room who were in a hurry to get their morning meal in time to get off on the train. They hurried the waiter, and in turn the waiter tried to hurry the cook by using language toward him that they use in Missouri to the mules. The cook had a plate of cakes in his left hand, and reached for his 44 revolver with the other. One shot stopped the argument and left the restaurant without a waiter, and the guests then did their own waiting, and put in their own orders to the cook, who behaved very nicely- but the guests did not swear at him."

When I was a kid 50 years ago I worked for the national park service in tent camps. The first thing you learned was to not bug or complain to the cookie!

Hilarious!! What is it they say about armed and polite societies?

"Pistols do not win wars, but they save the lives of the men who do. The noble 1911 is a mechanical marvel, whose ruggedness, dependability & ferocious power have comforted four issues of GIs and which, unlike any other instrument you can name, is as much superior to its rivals today as it was in 1917."

Yep. Don't cuss at a cook who is carrying a pistol.

Too funny. Another reason why you don't mess with the cook.
