My name is Bubba, this is my Enfield; Pics!
In order to relieve some of the winter blahs, I would like to submit photos of last winter’s project.
This is my bubba’d Enfield, so that makes me Bubba. It’s an Ishapore No.1 Mk3* made in 1963. It used to be ugly as sin, with a coat of brushed on black paint on all the metal and very dark, oily wood that was way oversized. I’ve never really considered the Ishapore Enfield to be historically very significant and in a way just a copy of a “real” Lee-Enfield. I got this as a Christmas present from my father-in law. After looking at it for a few weeks and shooting it a little (it has a like new barrel and shoots very well) I decided to make a project out of it. After completely disassembling the rifle and removing the black paint, I discovered all the metal parts are like new, possibly unissued condition, and had a pretty nice green parkerized finish. That’s when I decided to make a more field ready rifle out of it, a little more in the flavor of a No. 5 jungle carbine without the flash suppressor and ugly butt plate. So I cut the barrel back six inches, mounted a No. 4 front sight assembly, did away with the standard rear sight, and installed a No. 4 handguard, then cut the fore end back to match the handguard. The entire stock was slimmed down to better match the metal, dents steamed out, and generally de-oiled. I also fabbed a new steel butt plate to replace the original heavy brass one. The stock was then rubbed down with boiled linseed oil, and is actually quite attractive now (the wood is teak by the way, which ended up being a very good match for the walnut handguard). I had a Williams 5D laying around that I modified at fit to the right side of the receiver.
I’m very pleased with the results and don’t regret it for a second. I believe this would have made a much better handling battle rifle, and makes a great all around hunting rifle now. It currently shoots minute of apple at 75 yards with no further tuning, but does show signs of vertical stringing as the barrel heats up. Let me know what you think!

Good on ya Bubba!
I like it too. All the enfields I see around here are missmatched numbers, carved up, and struck with importer IDs.

In USA, I've never seen a hunter with an Enfield in hand. But I observed a couple guys in Saskatchewon with these rifles. Perhaps Canadian hunters have a link to Great Britian.
Since the bolt face is designed for rimmed 303 cartridges, I've often wondered if a custom barrel for .348 could be fitted. Or for that matter, a custom wildcat based upon the 303 case such as 338 or 9.3mm. Just wondering out loud.

I appreciate all the comments and no one slamming me for hacking a piece of milsurp "history"!
txpete,
That No. 4 is insanely nice!
t.r.,
There are plenty of wildcats based on necked up and necked down 303 cases. The two I think would be the most interesting are the 35-303 and the .375 x 2 1/2" that Hobie has brought up. Re-boring and rechambering a No. 4 barrel to one of these should be cheaper than a re-barrel.

I started thinking well, I've got that Argentine Engineers Carbine, the bubbaed 1896 Swedish Mauser, 2 No.4 Mk Is, an AR-15, and my Garand... Oh, yeah, the 1876 Winchester NWMP SRC reproduction... OH! and the Brown Bess (albeit a "carbine"). No, I don't like those "military" guns one bit.
PS - I'd forgotten about the Russian 1891 until I saw TXPete's post... DANG, I 'm a military collector!

Very nice job and a huge improvement. I would not call that a Bubba job at all.

I'm not a fan of old mil-surp bolt guns because of their size, that is a huge improvement and it can ride with me anyday. What kinda accuracy does it have?

Good Job as to the stringing try a pressure point 6" ahead of the knox form and free float at the barrel band.
Re: My name is Bubba, this is my Enfield; Pics!
I can keep the first three shots on an apple sized target with a field rest from a cold barrel. Shooting a 10 round mag at a rapid pace leads to the vertical stringing I mentioned.L_Kilkenny wrote:What kinda accuracy does it have?

Neat job I like it....Well done! No need to apologize...There are zillions of milsurp rifles floating around ...Too many folks now days have come to the preposterous view that they all should be seen artifacts of history, that must be jealously preserved, and that a person is some kind of bumbling fool to modify one in any way...Gosh maybe the Enfields in use in Afghanistan should be withdrawn so they don’t get banged up too much ... rant off .

I know, when I can find the klingkore soft points they go for around $20.00 + at gun shows for a box of 50 but they are getting really hard to find . All kksp are Round nose but they hold together very well, dare I say I think they are the best Factory bullet made for that time years ahead of the rest. I will have to get busy and post a pic of a kksp.I regret shooting gophers with them now. Note they used a k rather than a c because of Remington used a C but the Coreloct is no match for a kksp heck we had the first plastic pionted bullet. The saber tip. all available in .303.Hobie wrote:I wish the 215 gr. were readily available for prices like the .308 220 gr.

While I don't usually care for sportered milsurps - preferring that they remain in issued condition, I will say that that is a fine job and resulted in a very handy configuration.
I have one of those Ishipure Mk3's and its a excellent shooter - really likes my cast boolit loads - 200 grian Lyman gas check going around 2000 fps - 2", 100 yard groups.
And not to stir up a hornet's nest, but I think that rifle would edge out a levergun for a "bad times rifle" Primarlily because of the chambering and the ability to be charged from stripper clips.

I think I would agree with every word of that statement. With it's 10 round mag capacity, strippers clips, and fast, smooth bolt action a Lee- Enfield surpasses anything short of a Garand, M14, or similar auto-loader, IMHO of course.O.S.O.K. wrote:And not to stir up a hornet's nest, but I think that rifle would edge out a levergun for a "bad times rifle" Primarlily because of the chambering and the ability to be charged from stripper clips.

Re: My name is Bubba, this is my Enfield; Pics!
I like the Ishapore 308 shown in the first post.. great job, Bubba!! I started with a Rem 03A3 brought home on the school bus in 1961.. cut it down, remodeled and re-stocked it, had it blued and carried it for years as main whitetail rifle. (still have it) Since then, I have had chances to buy CMP A3s, (4), M1 Garands, (7), Remington 03 (1),several Lee Enfields, a Savage, a Lithgow 1919, a wire wrapped Ishy, lots of 91-30s, quite a few Finns, some russky 91s, an assortment of Mausers all in original as-issued condition.. and shoot most of them.. THEY WILL ALL STAY ORIGINAL AS LONG AS I AM THEIR CARETAKER!! But, along the way I have ran accross and given a good home to a dozen or so sporterized A3s, Mausers etc.. and I have re-done some, rebarreled one to 338-06, some to 308.. and generaly just had a blast with them, doing no further harm to the dwindleing supply of historicaly important military rifles.. Proud to be a BUBBA myself, but also have a sense of what is important to preserve.. Les PS. Old Time Hunter, I think that is one of my Brother-in-Laws..
