OT Weird noises from AR15

Post by TedH »

The last time I took my DPMS AR15 to the range I noticed something strange. After every shot I heard and felt a "boing" which seems to be coming from the recoil spring. After I got home I took it apart and really couldn't see anything wrong. The inside of the housing was clean and lightly lubed. The spring piston thingy moves freely without any catches or hickups. This is the first AR that I've owned and have not shot it much yet so I don't know much about these critters. What's the deal?

Normal. It's the recoil spring inside the stock tube extension. Some have had luck lubing theirs to quiet them down but I just got use to the sound.

It didn't do it for the first couple hundred rounds, so when it started I assumed there was a problem. May clean it up and re-lube it and see what happens.

Perfectly normal.
There's a lot going on just below your ear. May not have noticed it
due to the excitement of a new rifle. :D

Nothing at all wrong with it; it's called "broken in". The "boing" is completely normal. Trust me, I've heard it many, many times, along with the occasional "sproing".

Don't run it dry. Throw some Rem oil on it. You will still hear it, but it shouldn't be so loud.

It's a spring inside a pipe.

Nah, perfectly normal for the fairly uninitiated. Besides, I just saw a new 1911 owner post on a 1911 forum that he couldn't get the thumb safety to engage unless the hammer was back.

My retired Army marksman competitor brother-in-law clued me in into the "cure" for the "boing". Lubing the spring works, but after a while any oil will migrate off the spring and the noise will come out again. Instead of Rem-oil and the like, use a light application of grease. I greased the spring of my AR five years ago, and haven't heard a "boing", or even a "sproing", since.

The level of spring noise is different as you wear different hearing protection. Plugs vs. muffs etc. I have one set of muffs when I shoot I swear all I can hear is the buffer spring. I have shot in the field hunting with no hearing protection and don't hear the buffer spring at all.

Try screwing a grease nipple to the spring housing and fill her up with grease, that'll shut it up

If you have it try some disk break bearing grease. Works great designed for high temps so it wont break down for a long long time but will hold dirt and grime so cleaning is still needed.

One of the main reasons I've never liked the AR platform... It just never sounded like a gun to me. Effecve, accurate, but just weird.

C'mon. Don't "fix" it. It's part of the charm of the EBR. Nobody can hear it but you, anyway.

Yeah, But I'm still weird enough to want a PUMP EBR... and to be working on the Rem 760 design mods to make it work...

Oh, you mean like the Rem. 7615?: http://www.remingtonle.com/rifles/7615.htm

Too bad they want as much for one of those as a decent AR, and they seem to have had feed issues (sigh...).

Now, a 7600 carbine in 308 that uses M14 mag just might be the ticket!

What were we talking about? Oh yeah, spring noise, as has been said, it's part of the rifle's "charm".

Ahhh, you beat me to it.

Feed problems??? Probably a magazine issue, not the rifle. I could be wrong, of course.

Hearsay and second hand knowledge on my part but doesn't look like Remington is currently cataloging the 7615 and it's variants, but I could be wrong there.

Actually, I'm papering out how to make a 760/7600 into a bullpup config. With a 10 rd Eagle brand mag, it could be rather interesting.

Working on something similar myself. In case you didn't know the stock adaptors for an 870 20ga work perfectly on the 760. You also might want to try and find some of the old Colyer Clips, they're well made of steel. I've never been able to get the plastic ones to install without fitting or that feed reliably. But the Colyer's only hold 8 rounds (good enough for the Garand  ) The ones made for .308/.243 with the spacer block removed work better for a .30-06 than the normal .30-06/.270 one do.
