Puma 480 ruger

I've been looking at geting a puma 480 ruger. I was wondering if this rifle will feed right with heavy 425gr cast bullets. From what I hear, Puma's are great guns. Is this right?

Mine fed EVERYTHING I put through her. This includes heavy, 400gr KT style bullets and LBT style bullets up to and including 435gr Cast Performance projectiles. Good Luck, 1886.

"Pumas are great guns" - I agree with that.

I don't have the .480, though, so you'll have to wait for a more specific answer there. Mine in other calibers don't seem too finniky though.

Excellent guns but the most abusive rifle I've ever had.

I can shoot my .450 Marlin,
Ultra light Springfield '06
Model 38 Mosin,
Enfield Jungle cabine,
All day,
but that nasty little 480 / 92 was the absolute worst!
I paid a fortune for mine as it was heavily customized.
Traded it off for a little more than half of what I had into it.

Yes that's was a good rifle actually just like my father give to me the Puma .480 Ruger 20 Round Barrel Stainless.

At last count, at least three of the local Puma .480's have been exhibiting "Growing Pains..."
That is, the receiver rings are becoming somewhat enlarged over the barrel shank, and headspace is growing noticeably...

One in particular belongs to a very knowledgeable levergunner, who decided from the beginning to keep track of any changes in his Puma .480 Carbine, thinking that the possibilty existed.

It's fate is being decided...

My Puma .480 handles the WFN bullets from Cast Performance in my handloads without any problems. I use the IMR4227 powder in these loads and get exactly what I want as far as velocity and accuracy. The pig I hit with that load sure did a spectacular 280 degree barrel roll. The velocity should have been around 950 fps.
If the .480 is causing some swelling and other problems with the rifles, that is a big concern. The .454 Casull loads have quite a bit higher pressures, up to 52,000 cup versus 47,000 for the .480 Ruger. This data comes from the Hodgdon website. Even the .44 Mag is listed at no more than 38,400 cup, and the .357 Mag gives up to 42,500 cup. The .44 and the .357 have the advantage of being smaller in diameter so they can have more metal surrounding them for the same barrel diameter.
Buck, please keep us posted on those .480 Puma rifles and let us know if any of them fail. Maybe I'll just err on the side of caution and start using my caliper to keep track of everything. Perhaps this growth could be due to trying to achieve maximum velocity every shot.

I don't plan on shooting much more than "Colt 45 +P+" level loads in my Rossi .454 Casull for that very reason! I wanted a stainless .45 levergun with a tube loading/unloading port, and that's what I got - it just has a bit longer chamber. Since I have no other .454 Casull, the long Casull brass will serve as my "Colt .45 +P+" brass so I don't use those loads in any old .45 Colts. It does seem the company was a bit 'overzealous' as to what they could accomplish with the 92 action, perhaps.

Glad they didn't try a .475 Linebaugh...
