You can do it yourself. As they say, it's not rocket surgery.

yes, but it takes a drill-press to do it right and you can't un-do holes.

I can only guess what a gunsmith would charge for this D&T job but it sounds like a good excuse to buy a small bench top drill press.

I actually managed to do it myself, and it really wasn't that hard (and I'm DANGEROUS with power tools).

I did use a drill press (it COULD be done without one, but best if you're really experienced).

I bought two taps incase I broke one (I did), and one CARBIDE straight-flute drill-bit. Cost maybe $30 for both.

However, I did put a scratch on the gun (now I know some ways to avoid that next time), but it was a 'field' gun anyway.

You could consider finding a retired machinist locally who may not be a 'gunsmith' but may walk you through the process.

Still a matter of lots of TRUST, especially if it is a valuable gun.

Dollars don't always offset risk, but if the guys here have a 'smith they recommend, and the dollars aren't huge, you may want to farm it out.

Too bad there are so many Bubba-smiths around. I know a guy who is very meticulous and may retire from a factory job soon, who has gunsmithing experience; I hope to talk him into starting his own business.

I have been drilling and taping for sight and scope mounts for 50 years or better and have yet to mess one up. It really is a very easy and basic machine shop operation.

I would not consider doing it without a decent drill press. The good news is Jet sells some good drill presses for very reasonable amounts. My 17 inch Jet is a good all around gunsmith drill press. A reloader and guy hobby guy will find many uses for a drill press once they have one. I consider a good drill press and bench grinder to be basic stuff for the serious gun crank.

Add a decent small lathe and you are free from having to buy only the stuff others want to sell. I have a 1947 Logan.

Good gunsmiths who will take the time to do even a simple D&t job right are scarce these days. I would have to drive 170 miles to fine a gunsmith who I trust. The cost of shpping firearms off for small work, makes it smart to accumulate a few of the basic tools. If you can change the plugs, point and oil filter in your car you can do 95% of gunwork. There are still something that require great skill and craft.

remshooter , Drop by after work some night and I will show you how to do it.

I`m just down the street from you about 3,000 miles.

It is really not a big deal once you have done it but that first time can be a real nail biter.
New tools are a must. I use a brand new drill and tap for each job.

I wish I had done it myself. As it is, the local gunsmith screwed up the job - and charged me for the privilege. :x

Oh, well, lesson learned. I've got a drill press and will buy some cheap steel and learn to D&T myself.

Paul, I read your comment and thought for a moment I'd posted it. I had the same experience with TWO gunsmiths here in Springfield. I've decided from now on if my guns break or need work and I can't do it, they'll just get stuck back in the closet until "I" can do it. In central IL there are no gunsmiths worthy of the title.

My next tool purchase will be a drill press and it's related vises. I've got three receiver sights to drill holes for and several other drilling projects that are just waiting for that day.
