WHO IS GOING TURKEY HUNTING?

Post by RIHMFIRE »

Turkey season opens up this weekend in Central Florida.
I am headed to the woods this friday afternoon...
Travel trailer is all cleaned and stocked up and ready to go.
All I need is a couple new diaphram calls and I am set.
I use a primos box cutter call, which I highly recommend,
great for fly down cackles, cutting, and yelping
and 3 different slate calls for fly down cackles, cutting, yelping,
putting and purring.
Cant wat til friday!
Who else is going?

We have a bumper crop this year, big flocks all over the place.
These turkeys are what I consider inedible.
Perhaps my cooking methodology is flawed.

We open in April and have a bumper crop of turkeys. I have seen flocks of over a hundred birds this winter. We will be out hunting them as soon as it's open and will try for a couple more gobblers agan. This will be my 30th turkey season.

Turkey hunting is one of those things I will never ever try. Don't get me wrong, everyone (and that means everyone!) I talk to says it's a blast and the best hunting experiience one can have. But I DON'T NEED ANOTHER HOBBY! Just can't do it. Yard work, house remodeling, camping, canoeing, etc etc . My spring and summer is full full full. So you guys have at it, have fun and be safe. Look forward to the stories when you get back. Better include some pics!

Heres the deal,up at my place they run around like chickens
When pulling up in my driveway have to be cautious going slow not to run them over.
No Sport-----------the neighbors feed them "nice old folks '
Maybe will in the Pa State Game Lands ,or nephews place in Pa(1080acres/950 wooded ??)
Not up in NY though! BUT, He is Hunting mine. For me its just no sport there.

Second weekend in April provided it doesn't interfere with my daughter's birthday party. I'm going but I can't say I'm terribly stoked about it this year though.

My place is like Madman4570's place, lot's of turkeys I just don't hunt them in the spring. I do buy a fall tag and shoot one with a .22 rifle that is fun.
This year I donated a spring tom turkey hunt for a local disabled solider. We will make him a big breakfast, call one in for him and celebrate. Even Wheel chair bound we can get him to a good postion using the ATV.

They are like rats around here in Nor Cal, I don't care to eat them, so I let them do their thing. I wonder if frying them like a turkey would improve their fare?

Yep! Unless Mr. Stomach Flu or Mr. 104.9 degrees comes knocking at my door like he usually does, and spend that time nursing 3 sick little boys. This year I am very excited as I am able to let my 9 year old son come along and take a bird. I have to carry his gun for him until he gets set up and ready to shoot. Looking forward to this year!

I have never gone for turkey before, but I hope to this year. I will probably only try with my bow because it makes it 100 times harder and 1000 times more fun. Can't wait!

Hopefully we'll get one of those fantastic pictures of your bird again this year. Where's the link to that photo?

I'm taking my 3 year old on opening day. Last year his brother shot a Rio. We're going to a spot where they have Easterns and Rios. If we get lucky, I'll post pictures.
