Movie: The Proposition
We watched "The Proposition" yesterday. It is a very good Australian "Western". A brass frame 1866 Winchester plays a part, as do several Colt cartridge conversions of what look to my less than expert eye like 1851 Navy's. There are also plenty of Martini's in action and various shotguns and other revolvers.
I am curious what our Aussie members think of this one? I know they panned "Australia" and I probably will never see it but my wife and I really enjoyed this one. It has it all: wide open spaces and big skies, horses, good actors and a good story to boot. It is a bit bloody but no more so than many other newer movies.

Re: Movie: The Proposition
I normally keep an eye out for 'westerns', and local movies of this genre. I have never heard of 'the proposition'.
The last one I heard of was Wolf Creek and of course 'Australia'.
Can anyone help- who is staring in it?

I have seen it, thought it was a real good show. Love the old Martini rifles too. Still plenty for sale down here with the various Australian state markings. Should get one for a fun gun someday.

Re: Movie: The Proposition
I liked it. It's not one I could watch over and over like some of the Clint Eastwood flicks, but it was worth the time to sit through for sure.
Re: Movie: The Proposition
Yeah, I liked it too. In fact I bought the DVD. Very raw, no holds barred type of movie, not a pretty one though. Guy Pierce was excellent.
Re: Movie: The Proposition
I loved the movie and have watched it a number of times. While I think it's a great movie, it's not a "nice" movie. While it's visually beautiful, it's also harsh and ugly in many ways. Probably not for everyone.
Slow is just slow.

Re: Movie: The Proposition
I borrowed it over the weekend and watched it.
I agree it is a 'visually beautiful' movie- however, I find this 'beauty' annoying in a way, in that it gives people in other countries completely the wrong idea about what Australia is like.
It is possible to find areas here that are that stark, but most of it, even in our deserts, is not that stark.
Most producers of movies do it, I imagine it comes from some sort of theatrical idea about not wanting any distraction from the story. The only locally made movie that has not done this recently is Australia, and that is because it was party funded by tourism dollars.
