OT - Had a Scare Last Night

Post by COSteve »

Our 23yr old daughter called yesterday afternoon to tell us she had a fever, vomiting, and diarrhea and was going to the Dr.'s near college (40 miles from us). Later, the Dr.'s office called and told us they were sending her to the hospital as they suspected her appendix could be ready to burst!

We jumped in the car and drove up there, while calling her brother who's working at NIST across from the college to tell him what was going on. Picked him up and by the time we all got to the hospital, they had her in in the ER, hooked up with oxygen, needles in her arm, meds for pain, were running all sorts of checks, and generally not sure what was wrong but agreed that appendicitis was possible.

After a number of tests till late at night, they decided to run a CT scan to check out her 'inards' and thankfully found that she had an infection in her intestines that had swollen them but her appendix was fine. After a large dose of antibiotics and a long night, the swelling started to subside and they allowed us to take her home. We got her home about 6:30 am and she is starting to feel better and is sleeping.

The incident scared us so much we can't sleep yet but I have a request for each of you. Go hug everyone in your family right now and thank God for their good health. There isn't anything more frightening than a really sick child no matter how old they are.

I consider myself a very rich man because everyone in my family including my 89 year old mother is in great health. Without health you have nothing. Hope your daughter feels better soon. Prayers and best wishes for you and yours.

Steve - so glad she appears to be on the mend. Prayers done for continued and fast recovery. My sister in law went for over a month--the doctors say--with a burst appendix (had felt "something amiss in her gut initially then it quickly went away and gave it no more thought). She went critical and was dicey for over two weeks with major surgery. Til then, she'd been the picture of health for 62 years--never sick. Fine now, but was a close call. So, so glad it wasn't that--and always good to have things checked out is the lesson--but sounds bad enough. As you say, give a hug...

They determine exactly what it was yet??? Lots can go wrong in there!!! My dad had Colitis... I've had Diverticulitis (infected pocket in the lower intestine, PAINFUL!!) most are painful and scary, but getting looked at FAST is the key here.. good move to go in for treatment quickly! Best wishes for fast and full recovery..

Steve, I have twin girls now 29. They've been through gymnastics, platform diving, other sports. They've been to college. One's had 2 babies. I never let up on the hugs and prayers for their safety. Very glad to add you gal to my thoughts and prayers...... I'm so glad to hear the medical folks have made the right call and early!

Steve, glad she will be allright. Just remember, don't ever be afraid to get a second opinion as Doctors are human just like us and they can make mistakes. The intestinal tract is nothing to ignore.

Glad your young ladie's going to be ok. Plus 1000 on never missing a chance to call or hug a loved one, I decided not to call and talk to my Dad one night...and never got another chance. You just never know when the Lord will call someone home.
