Rossi M92 configurations

Post by TriggerPhinger »

Hey all,
I am new to this forum and have been enjoying the various topics. I have just ordered a 44 mag Rossi m92 with 20 inch hex barrel and case hardened receiver etc. I notice that there are quite a few variations on the 1892 and there seems are different forearm configurations. My rifle has a metal forearm cap. Can someone explain the differences in these Rossi rifles?
Thanks

I'm sure Steve Young (aka Nate Kiowa Jones)--our resident 92 expert--and others can do a better job of it, but basically Rossi's come or have come* in the configuration you have, also known as
--Short Rifle (20" octagonal barrel with rifle configuration forearm (end cap'd, no barrel band) and a mag tube hanger vs the carbine's front barrel band. These have the old (sharp crescent) rifle butts on them. Not only a more radical curve to the buttplate over the carbine, but a longer length-of-pull (LOP) as well IIRC--WRT to the length of the buttstock.
--Rifle, aka long rifle--same as above but 24" I believe
--Carbine, aka saddle ring carbine or SRC for those so equipped, 20" round barrel, "carbine" forend (barrel band) and front barrel band. Carbine butt as described above.
--Trapper, essentially a short carbine, these days limited to 16". In the the days of original Winchester yore, 14" and 15" were occasionally seen as well.
--I believe at some point Rossi made some half-octagonals, but I think that was long ago (80s?), and I'm not sure about a round barreled "regular" rifle.
--These have variously come in all blue, stainless and color-case hardened (look) receiver with the rest blue'd, as well as a smattering of brass (looking) receivers.
----
*I'm not all that up on Rossi's current offerings for sale (they've gone through a lot of iterations over the years WRT various distributors; currently Rossi itself--now owned by Braztech/Taurus--is the only active importer though some new-old-stock guns of other distributors are still out there, namely/primarily LSI (Legacy) and EMF).

This link has good pictures and most of the descriptions are correct. The one item I found that appears to be incorrect is the carbines with the scout score rail and stock extension. They aren't listed below in the next link and none of my distributor catalog them.

Thanks for your responses. I was concerned about receiving a rifle that didn't have the end cap on the forearm as I have seen on some postings of the Rossi M92. I have ordered the DVD from Steve in case I need to fluff and buff the 92.

Thanks for ordering my DVD and BTW welcome to the fire. If you hang out hear long you won't be able to resist the urge to tinker with it. I think it's some kinda virus we all here have some how contracted.
As to the forend caps on the current Rossi 92's just just remember the octagon rifles have them but the round barrel carbines use barrel bands.
