Using a Bore Snake

How many use a Bore Snake to clean their rifles and what kind of results do you get?

I guess I should of specified using a bore snake on a lever gun. Thanks.

I have one for a .22 cal. I really like it but you can do a lot more scrubbing action with a Dewey coated cleaning rod. They are mainly for light cleaning and carrying with you in the field. I would like to get more of them.

I use them on ALL of my guns, including the Muzzleloaders with removable breeches.

I really HATE getting crud down in my actions, and it seems silly to completely disasemble a gun to properly clean it from Breech to Crown.

Sure, if I HAVE to scrub (and I've never had to yet), I'd disasemble & rod.

But I'm all Bore Snake, All the time.

I'm with OI on this one. I tried a Bore Snake and got excellent results. I went and purchased on for .22, use one for .45 and one for .50. In combination with a foaming bore cleaner I get good shiny barrels with about 3 or 4 passes of the snake. That's all the barrel cleaning I'm into anyway.

I own 6-7 of them and use them often.
I'll use a brush and patch after shooting alot of lead just to see whats coming out of the barrel.

I use Bore Snakes on all caliber guns and find them quick and effective.

It seems obviously that they don't scratch the receiver or so many died in the wool levergunners wouldn't use them. That says a lot to me.

I've got one bore-snake and the results I've gotten with it aren't anything that would prompt me to buy another one.

From what I'm reading above I can only conclude that I must be doing it wrong.

What's the proper way to use one of these things? Or maybe that's the wrong question...

How do you guys use 'em? Are you s'pose to soak 'em up with solvent or do you run 'em through dry? How long do they live?

I use the .45 snakes exclusively as as back-and-forth scrubbers in my 45-70 guide gun and 45 Colt SAA's. Spray with solvent, pull through to the loop and then back through the other way, repeat several times or until clean.

Also have them in .17 (.17 HMR), .22 (handguns/rifles), .30 (300WSM) & 12 ga. Don't use rods at all anymore. My original .45 has been on the job for about 5 years. When it gets frayed, I just trim it with scissors and burn it back a bit (carefully) with a match. Have a new .45 that I've never used.
