Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
I'm setting up a bison hunt. It will be free-range bison, camping and cooking out and traditional gear. A BP cartridge, Muzzleloader or a period rifle/cartridge or modern rendition is acceptable. For example: Win 71 in 348 was NOT around in the great bison days but is appropriate for this hunt. An in-line muzzleloader is okay but not a scope. This will be an overnight trip. I have several locations in mind but would like to see the interest level first. Time frame would be Feb or March. Anyone?

Kansas
Wyoming
Texas
Colorado
Oregon
Nebraska
New Mexico
These are reputable places I contract with for hunts that have low fence and vast acrerage. If this is to be a "meat hunt" instead of a "trophy hunt" I can keep the price down - what's the max for most folks? How about $2000 - would that work is does it need to be more like $1500?
Yes an '86 will work even in a Turnbull caliber or Alaskan caliber.

So a Pedersoli Sharps in 50AK would be OK?

Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
Thunder50 - YES. These are just loose guidelines to enhance appreciation for the bison days of yesteryear. One element fits the period - the TYPE of rifle (Sharps clone). That'll do it. If it were a 1895 Marlin in 50 AK it would not technically fit the criteria, but it shouldn't foresake the owner's participation as long as all other participants had no problem with it.

I would love to, but simply cannot afford it at the moment. I would use my .54 caliber Lyman great Plains if I could.

I'm leaning towards Nebraska because it is centrally located in the US and there is no license required. It could be cold and snowy but not likely as cold or snowy as ND or SD. Need a potential headcount.....

OH GOSH!!! .40-90SBN in a Sharp's rifle, .45-70 in an 1886 rifle... or .53 caliber J&S Hawken clone... maybe the Henry in .45Colt... I could pretend to be Lt. Dunbar... heck I'd use BP in 'em all! let's see, Oct to Feb... 4-5 months to save $2000... let's see, oh... wait... reality sets in...
Joe, great idea. I'll have to start saving for 2012, will wish the rest of ya the best of luck... good hunting.
ps: Anyone need a photographer to document their hunt? I could be had... cheaply!!!! Well, maybe not so cheaply!
pps: Anyone want to rent one of the above rifles? With ammo? It'd only cost... let's see... what was that price again?

Nebraska sounds interesting. I've shot some on ND, and winter is a factor. I'll keep this in mind. Kelye @ Belt Mtn
Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
I live in Nebraska, and I would have some interest in this hunt. Would have to use the TC Muzzle loader in .50cal. (shotgun 209 primer, but not an inline, just uses 209 instead of musket cap)
Whatever, I can find something of period, that won't be the problem.
I would prefer to shoot a good young meat bull. I don't need a trophy.
I have eaten bison for over 10 years, I don't eat beef anymore. (except in restaurants)
Could use some meat by then.
I have moose hunt scheduled in 2011 also, so can't afford a lot. Wife will throw me out.

Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
I'm a distant possibility. I very much want to do this, but budget constraints are very tight and timing might also put me out of the running, nevertheless, I'd like to keep tabs on this. I would want a meat hunt; not really interested in chomping down on some tough old trophy bull. I would also have to look into how I get the meat back across the border. I would use a legal antique '86 in 45-70 if that qualifies for the hunt, so I should not have firearms issues on either side of the border.
Edit: The closer it is the better the chance that I could make it, so Kansas would be my first choice, followed by Nebraska. Also, the closer it was to $1,500 the better the chance that I could swing/justify it as a meat hunt.

Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
Sounds pretty good! I live in Nebraska, have all the gear, (have slept in a tent with no heat at -17F before) and will likely be looking for more Bison meat around that time also. I would like to say yes, but can only say maybe right now. Money being the issue. When do you need a firm yes by? You know me and I won't say yes if the answer is really "I hope so". Are you presently familiar with how the ranch you have in mind is set up do deal with the meat? This thread is making me hungry. I am almost out of bison right now. Probably less than 20 lbs left. Like Marlin32 I don't eat beef at home.

Oregon would cut me out. Everyplace else is driving distance and okay. Not a fan of the airliner, especially on a hunting trip.

I might be interested. Meat Bison for me. Nebraska is preferred. I'm thinking .54 cal flintlock, or longbow with the longbow being preferred.

Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
I am potentially interested in a meat hunt. If it was around $1500 it would be about the same price as buying my usual side of beef, and it would be a whole lot more fun I would prefer Texas or New Mexico, but I could probably swing Colorado, Kansas, or Nebraska.

Let's give this a bump
Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
This trip is coming together. So far it looks like the dates will be first week of March 2011 and the location will be Central Nebraska. I can take 6 hunters. The targets will be meat bison around 900 lbs. Bigger specimens are available at a slightly greater cost. Right now the estimated cost assuming 6 hunters is $1750. There is lodging available for $60 per night or tent camping/travel trailer can be accomodated. All hunting will be on foot and equipment is to be traditional style. I will guide on approximately 8800 acres of free roaming herd. Processing and taxidermy are available nearby or I will assist in skinning and quartering to take home with you. How many are still "in" for this trip with these parameters?

Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
Meat bull is about right, but $1750 a bit much for me. I can run one into locker, and have enitre processing done, all I have to do is pick up the finished product for about 1k.
Of course, I don't get to shoot it.

Yes, I've negotiated lodging included in the price and dropped the total price to $1700 now. This is subject to securing the dates and # of attendees, so I need feedback asap, please.

Re: Who's interested in a Leverguns Traditional Bison Hunt?
Do you have any figures on the cost of processing? $1700 is very enticing, but I don't have the means to process something that big here at the house, so it also depends on that cost.

Love to go on either, but stupid neighbor dog taking out my knee, keeps me from walking very far, maybe 1/2 mile if I am lucky. Central Nebraska is closer, but weather that time of year can be brutal.
Texas one sounds better, but double the mileage.
