Howdy...!

Tell us, if you could only have one, and it had to either be a .45-70, or a .444 Marlin, which would YOU choose...

(May as well find out which team he's on right away... )

By the way, here's the "answer key"
  • a. "I'd rather have a .45-70" = WRONG! They're obsolete, the hole in the receiver is too big for modern loads/pressures, and they blow up all the time...

    b. "I'd rather have a .444 Marlin" = WRONG! The bullets don't have enough cross-sectional area or weight to kill a stray cat, and the only bullets you can find are pistol bullets that blow up when they hit fur...

    c. "I've already got both, but what I really like is my .405 Winchester" = CORRECT!

Honestly I'd have to say the obsolete 30/30... Lol its just one I have always come back to...

Altho I am quite fond of my 44 mag and here lately the 338 marlin express...

Ahhhh... The classic debate! The 405 sounds interesting! Or how bout the 450 marlin?

As I said above the 338mx has my affections lately but sticking to the question, here is my answer: I don't reload so I'll go with the 444 cause factory ammo seems to shoot flatter in this caliber. Now, as soon as I buy some reloading equipment, I will have the 45/70 so I can play with different loads. I hear they are fun to load for. Did I pass? :D

Haven't checked in in a while, so just wanted to drop in and say hi.

Have gotten into 45 Colt lately and Marlins in that caliber are expensive and hard to find, so i ordered a couple Rossi 92's to play with a little bit. Hopefully they will arrive this coming week and i can get going. Got a 16" and a 24" model. Im a lil excited. Got a couple single action Rugers and a H&R Classic Carbine in the caliber so i guess its only fitting.

Kinda got sidetracked before so here are a couple pics of what i have now.

I wanted a Marlin in 45 Colt, and found a barrel (round, which was what I really wanted vs. the fancy octagonal, anyway) at Numrich for $100. I took my old 1894 in 44 Mag, some scrap lumber and bolts (for an 'action wrench'), an AR-15 barrel-vice insert, and swapped barrels. The only 'cost' was like a dummy I let the bolt go too far forward when screwing in the new barrel (it has to be IN the receiver to keep it from being squished by the vice/action wrench, but if too far forward the extractor will get sheared off as the barrel turns snug up to it).

All in all, it went well, though. You might consider that if you really want a Marlin in 45 Colt, because you can find LOTS of them in 44 Mag, and ALL the other parts are the same, despite what some will tell you (I called Marlin a few years back and confirmed that, plus have written parts-numbers that confirm it). Oh yeah, and the gun functions just fine, too...

Howdy Joe and welcome to a band of misfits. (Speaking for myself)

Let's talk about that single action Ruger with the brass frame and the black eagles. (The one by the tree) Kinda hard to tell from my screen......OM or NM? I can see 2 screws and a possible third. Anyway, if there is a third screw on that Ruger, I need to have the gun. :D Don't see too many factory brass framed OM's. If it's a new model with an aftermarket brass frame and hand fitted black eagles, it's still a nice gun.

Love that one myself. I lucked into it. Traded a buddy it for an ol Encore i had. It is a pieced together 45. Factory brass frame from another gun, super hammer, wide trigger. Shoots 4" groups at 100 w/ scope off the bench. I aint quite that good off hand with irons at 25 myself tho. Lol

Thanks for the pic Joe. Even before I read what you wrote, my heart took a jump when I saw the "45" prefix on the serial number, meaning it's a 45 Colt. There's only 595 OM brass framed 45 Colts.

Either way, even though the frame is not original to the gun, your gun is desirable as there are more 44 flattops than there are OM 45 Colts.

I believe you will fit right in here, but......I have to warn you, sometimes you have to have thick skin. We have a wild bunch here. Be especially careful of this trucker from Texas. He calls himself Griff. I have known him to drive 2,000 miles in his Kenworth just to beat up a guy from Pennsylvania who called him a long haired hippy. :D ------6
