Amanda's first deer

Post by n2t »

Finally got her fist rifle and has been putting in range time. It's got a lever to open it, so we'll count it as a levergun, lol TC contender in 7-30 waters. Shooting a 139grn hornady SST with 33grns of H4895 and around 2400fps. Deer was hit at a lazered 66 yards, high in the shoulder, blew out the onside shoulder, took out the top of the lungs and exited the offside ribs. Deer dropped instantly and after working in to 25 yards, was finished with a shot to the chest that exited the top of the back between the shoulder blades. Neither bullet recovered, but I'm extremely impressed with what a "lowly" 2400fps does for damage and penetration was perfect. She'll be going on the hog hunt this Jan and most likely try the 120grn sierra and the 139grn hornady and see what the preferance will be. All in all, a great hunt, and outstanding performance by the little 7-30. Pics are too big for the site, so I'll put up some links.

well done Amanda. Hunting like a pro, TC, ethical kill. Well done indeed.

Fantastic. I've got a 7-30 Contender. Had to go look in the safe to see that it was still there! Just like yours albeit with a smaller scope.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Yeah imho it's a great round. I wish they had done a similar thing by necking the 30rem down to 7mm and putting it in a bolt action but oh well. She's doing well, we'll sight it in for 50 yards and try a couple bullets on hogs. I'm bringing a 35 rem in .357 mag pistol. The results of her 7-30 have me thinking hard about a 250 savage for some reason...

Nice going!! I'm going to miss my opening day due to family stuff on Saturday but I have the rest of the week off to try and find one like that. Good eating size and VERY tasty. Wish me luck.

Way to go Amanda! Good hunting. I look forward to seeing both of y'all in January on the hog hunt. Bring some of that deer along and we'll put it in the stew pot for supper one night.
