30/30 and Moose

Post by brno602 »

I lent my 30/30 to my best Friends dad,he wanted something light and handy as the years are creeping up on him so he left his .300 Win at camp and took the little carbine for a walk.
Well he got a nice spike bull Moose yesterday with it in the snow 300yrds from camp the rest of his hunting party was staying in camp as the weather was bad so he went for a short walk ( he needs a cain as his hip is bad.
Kinda cool story wish I had pics, he also used 50 year old factory C.I.L ammo he had and did not want to shoot up my ammo, old school thinking.
1 shot at 50 yds Moose went about 20yds and piled up not bad for a Old man and a Old Caliber wish I could of seen it! I know he has a soft spot for the 38/55 but I only had the 94 in 30/30 :D
It means so much too me as this might be his last hunt.

P.S I only lend out my guns if I know they will come back in better shape than I lent them out. I got it back in a new case he felt sorry for the canvas case I gave it to him in

That's a great story. The 30-30 in the right hands will get the job done. I wish I had some of that old CIL ammo. I used to shoot it back in the 60s and 70s till it became unobtainium.

I do hope it's not his last hunt and he asks to borrow your 30/30 again next year. :D

lol I miss my Blue nosed plastic tip ammo too but some were yellow and of course you could get lead tip but why when the plastic looked so cool?
I hope I get some steak from this as I am not dew for a Moose draw for about 2 years.
Funny thing is me, my friends all hunt often with are big super mags but deep inside we know a .303 /30/30 that we used for so many years will get the job done.
I was told he is small in horn but big in body no such thing as a small Moose.
Funny thing is he thought my 99 in .300 was a bit heavy!so he took the 94

He said last year would be his last hunt but the Doctors made him feel alot better plus he had that draw that takes 4 years to get just so happy he got it right at camp too.

Good job on his part - 30-30 should be a fine caliber at that range.

That's the kind of story I really like to read.
Kirk: An old geezer who loves the smell of freshly turned earth, old cedar rail fences, wood smoke, a crackling fireplace on a snowy evening, pristine wilderness lakes, the scent of
cedars and a magnificent Whitetail buck framed in the semi-buckhorn sights of a 120-year old Winchester.

I hope to hunt with Ed at least one more time, his son is my best friend the only man I would trust with anything in my life!
That is just how it goes with best friends.
But age can and will catch us all sad to say but 80 is still great to out hunt the 70 year olds in camp :D just glad he did not show up us 40 somethings ( Ed can smell a Moose a mile away)

That's a fantastic story and one very worthy of the grand old .30 WCF. If I had a dollar for everything that's bitten the dust over the sights of a .30-30 I'd retire immediately.

Hope I'm still hunting when I hit 80...
