My First Levergun Deer

Post by chipper »

I'm new here and would like to say hello to everyone.I took my first levergun deer yesterday with my Marlin 336C 30-30.
The deer is only a medium size doe, but man, what a hit I put on her.I reload my own ammo and was using a 150gr.Speer hot-core
at about 2300fps @ the muzzle.I got a broadside double lung hit with a 1 inch exit wound.I checked the vegetation on the far side
of the doe and there was blood, hair and lung matter about 6 feet from the body.It was about a seventy yard shot and my first time
using the hot core bullets on deer.
I like my new hunting combination so much,I'm thinking of giving up my bolt actions. :D

Welcome aboard and congratulations!

It's good to see somebody else making good
use of the "underpowered" 30-30 round.

Good shooting, and good eating, eh?

I got my first lever gun deer this year also. I dropped a 7 point Dead in its tracks with a 170 grain remy core loc bullet.
My hunting partner last year did the same thing on a doe. Both deer never took another step with the ol dirty thirty.
I am sold on the 30-30 as the ultimate deer round.

It has become more and more obvious to me that the deer are no longer wearing bullet proof kevlar vests anymore. There was a time when 300win mag was the minimum needed for whitetail. Congrats on your proper use of the old 30-30 and may it carry on for another 100+ years.

Thank you for all the warm welcomes.I'm hunting the same area tomorrow as I have my eye on a nice 6 pointer.
The more I shoot the 30-30 the more I like it.I will try to get some pictures posted later on tomorrow.
Hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving Holiday !!! :D

Got a picture to go with my first post and I took another doe Thanksgiving morning while she layed in her bed.
She thought I would walk by without seeing her.I had one doe tag left and she made a bad mistake.

Way to go! The 30-30 hasn't been around 100 years for nothing. It is a wonderful cartridge.

I'm in upstate NY, over next to Vermont, in the Adirondack foothills. In the area I hunt in about 85% of all our bucks get shot when they are only 1 1/2 years old.Mature bucks are far and few between.I'm still after a six pointer I saw twice before our gun season opened and if I can take him,he will be a trophy to me because of the area I hunt in.

Congrat's on the deer. I shot my first levergun deer with that same rifle and I'm pretty sure that same bullet....in 1977! I bought the rifle used from a friend for 65.00 and was home on leave from the military and went deer hunting with my dad and some of his friends. Now I'll end up spending half the day looking for the picture. I was just as enthused with the 30-30 as you seem to be. Even though I have a safe full of deer rifles, my 30-30 has taken more deer than all of my other rifles combined. It also planted the seed of a levergun "affliction".
