OFF Topic: Stoeger over under shotguns

Post by 3leggedturtle »

Anyone have it. Either 20 or 12 gauge with the 20"barrels and the funky rifle sights. How do you like? Do barrels patterns close to each other? How durable are they for 1500-2500 rounds of ammo. Really am intrigued by them.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

3leggedturtle,

If you mean the Stoeger-- Outback.

I have a 12 gauge.

I haven't spent enough time with it to know if it will do all that I hoped. I do know the sights are plenty high for 12 gauge slugs the gun shoots about a foot high, but it's centered within acceptable group patterns.

I believe the gun came with two removable chokes-- imp. cylinder and full (? 3 notches ?). I purchased a cylinder bore choke to replace the full tube, basically to try the old fashion foster type slugs.

I have used that choke with bird shot to deal with short range farm pests and I really like the way it performs. You need to really do some adaptation with your wing shooting habits to compensate for the short barrels.

Think in terms of faster swings, longer leads, etc.. However I have been able to take starlings and blackbirds on the wing, but it is (at least for me) a challenge.

Overall I like the gun. I still need to work with it to become more proficient.

Due to the seeds planted by Paco's double barrel 45-70 concept-- one of my future ideas is to try rifled barrel inserts. A .45 long colt insert would appear to be more practical for me, than a 45-70.

I don't know much about their O/U's But I've worked several of the SXS's for the CAS folks. These folks tend to run them hard and about the only trouble I'm hearing about is with the single trigger guns. A small percentage of these have had either one barrel not firing or worst, both barrels firing!!!! :o

I've seen the same thing with some of the other low-end single trigger SXS's as well. So, I'm not a big fan of the low-end single trigger guns. Most all of the top CAS shooters that shoot single trigger SXS's are using the Browning BSS's or SKB's. $$$$

one of the guys in our skeet and trap club has one...
its an ok gun...I would not buy one....
probably because I am partial to Berettas', Remingtons, Browning, and such...
1500 to 2500 rounds is nothing....
I have shotguns that have 100,000 rounds through them

I was going to buy a 20 ga. from a friend. That thing was so hard to break open, I could hardly do it without using my knee.

Is there a way to loosen one of these things up? I didn't buy it. I was wanting a 20 ga. O/U but not this one.
