Really nice photos. I enjoy seeing the old photos of men and their guns.

Did anyone ever really wear those sheep skin chaps?

I'd say they just very short men, at least for our time. In 1900 the average male height was just under 5'6" tall.Bronco wrote:Love pictures of old levers with looong barrels! What's your guess or is he just short?

Rifle on the left is considerably shorter. These look like the real deal to me.Bronco wrote:Love pictures of old levers with looong barrels! What's your guess or is he just short?

In Montana they sure did. Still do, I'd bet. You can't get any colder than when you are up on top of one of those hayburner things with a stiff breeze blowing...mikld wrote:Did anyone ever really wear those sheep skin chaps?
Those fellows are real well armed. No wonder we almost had the buffalo go extinct. Great old pictures!

Looking at the hands on the guy wearing the wool chaps in the last pic; his hands look like they've seen some real work, I bet his grip was like squeezing your hand in a vice. (like my Dad's grip was)

Alot of cowboys in the cool climates wore angora goat chaps and they would use a muskrat fur for a cup for the wind that came thru the gullet of the saddles back after the war of northern aggression a MT rancher brought 500 head of angora goats up from Texas selling them on the way. danny

You bet those cowboys wore woolies. Dan, hadn't heard about the muskrat cups. That's probably because I only play cowboy and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

I'd say a 28" barrel on the long winchester, although you could get them up to 36 inches at a dollar per inch. That would put the cowboy at 5-6 to 5-8" or just about average.

Very neat indeed. You don't often see a high wall being toted in published photos. Reckon those gaiters are Army issue with the guy holding it?
The way that holster is worn by the guy with the woolies, you wonder if that wasn't some sort of prop. You'd think it would flop around and drive a man insane in pretty short order, or simply work it's way down over the hip and drop to the ground.

I looking at a picture of my Dad taken in 1943 when he was home on leave, wearing a pair of wooly chaps. I don't know if they are wool or bear skin. Have to ask one of my uncles.mikld wrote:Did anyone ever really wear those sheep skin chaps?

The first picture looks like those guys are real comfortable around firearms. They look like the real deal. The second picture looks like a guy I wouldn't want to tick him off in a bar. But, when I was visiting bars in the stupidity of my youth, mean and ugly didn't slow me down.
