Whats wrong with HOrnady XTPs?

Post by bluesman423 »

While bullet shopping this evening in diameters 358, 429 and 452 I noticed that Hornady XTP bullets were frequntly less expensive than most, even cast bullets. Why? Is there something wrong with them? I have used XTPs in the past with no problems at all while hunting and practicing.

Is there a reson to buy cast bullets over XTPs?

Casting equipment is more than I can afford right now.

XTPs are fine bullets, expanding well from 700 to 1500 fps and absolutely exploding at 2000 from a rifle (125 grain .357 Mag).

Look, if Bill Wilson thinks they're good enough for his custom ammo........

There is not a thing wrong with them! They are as good as anything out there, in my opinion. I've done some testing with them in ballistic gel, and wet phone books and they always perform admirably.

Nothing. Some people complain of them not performing well, but EVERYTHING I have ever shot with an XTP is dead.

Nothing wrong with XTP flying ashtrays,
Here is a five shot group fired at 100 meters with 24 grains of Australian ADI AR2205 powder ( equivalent to Winchester W296) with a 240 grain XTP in my rebarreled Marlin 44 Magnum Green Mountain 1 in 36 twist octagon.

I use the 300 gr in my 444 also. Real sledgehammer on hogs of ANY size. One of them two years ago weighed 418 and the bullet entered in front of the left shoulder and exited through the right ham. DRT (dear right there!).

Me, too. I have shot six deer now with that bullet saboted in my Ruger 77/50. None has run farther than 25 yards. Four of them were dead right there.

I used to use a different bullet in my 77/50. Since trying the 240-grain .44 XTP, that is all I'll use now.

I don't know how or why they are but Hornady's are always cheaper than the competition around here. XTP's are cheaper than Speer's, V-Maxs are cheaper than Nosler BT's, HPBT's are cheaper than sierras, etc etc. I don't complain, I like em and use em. 50gr V-maxs in the .22-250, 180's in the .357, 85's in the .243. All work very well and are accurate.

What chipper said.

My front stuffer is a very traditional looking Hawken built from a kit using all iron furniture except for the brass patch box and pewter fore-end cap. Has a Green Mountain bullet barrel which is great! 240 XTP and 90 grains of Goex ffg equals dead deer. Been using it for 12 or 15 years so must be 20 or so that I've taken with it. Nuthin wrong with XTPs.

I have had some issues when loading the 240 gr XTP's in my .444 cartridges, especially when I get up to max loads (2300+ fps). They seem to lose stability and a few even came apart splattering the target at a hundred yards. Out of my .44 Mag's they work fine till about 1800 fps (rifle), then they get a mind of their own, going from an 1" to 1 1/2" grouping I get with 240 gr JSP's, to 3"-4" groups with the XTP's.

Just my 2 cents...

Within their intended velocity envelope, XTPs are a fine bullet. I trust em explicitly.

They shoot accurate enough.. The target is one I shot with my 3rd model 1873 SRC @ 100yds..
The shots of the jackets are from some of mine I found in a 25yd berm..book says MV @1250
Notice how friction thru the jacket via the lands melted some of the core onto the jacket..However the shure exploded some punkins I blasted out @75yds..

In all the deer I've shot with the XTP, I've had through and through penetration. On one or two, I found just a bit of fragmented bullet. The vast majority of the bullet exited the animal each time. This has all been with a sabot in a .50 muzzle loader. I have yet to use one to take an animal with a handgun or my Marlin 1894 .44 Mag.

Your right they do blow up out of a rifle! I pushed a 300gr .430 at 2000fps out of my Hawken with a sabot.
But that was a early bullet they might make them tougher now? for the .444 and such.
The Deer hit was a monster and it droped in it's track but I have never seen so much damage before hit behind the shoulder.
For me Nosler handgun bullets seem cheaper up hear by a $ or two.
Nothing wrong with the XTP they shoot great just that I over reached the Vel for them.

I have a .380 load with them that if I describe what they do here, I will only give the anti's more ammo for thier agenda.
