Hearin protection

Post by Chas. »

I'd like to know what everyone uses for hearing protection. I have been using cheap set of earmuffs that I got at Walmart. I'd like to buy a new pair that has the electronics to allow converstion while blocking gunshot sound. I'm looking at the Radian Pro-Amp for a possibility. Any suggestions?

Custom molded earplugs that fill up your whole ear with a lanyard between them to keep them together. With really loud firearms I also put a set of muffs over the top of them.

While I would love to one day buy me some of the ear plugs that let you hear and then block out loud noise when it reaches a certain level.......I have not yet.

Muffs make my head hurt so I use what I have always used......the little orange rubber plugs that the Army gives you. I attach one of the little cases with the plugs in each bag that I may take to the range and also have a couple sets hanging on my truck mirror that way I am always with plugs cause I never know when I may find myself wanting to shoot.

This is exactly what I have and what I attach to all of my bags and mirror in my truck.

I find they work really well.

Ear muffs. I can't stand having plugs in my ears.

I've used Peltor earmuffs for years and years.

Very comfortalbe with a ball cap and glasses.

They come in various db/price/feature points.

Excellent value for the money - though all are not cheap.

I've been using Silencio plugs for outdoor shooting.
They have a diaphragm that closes when there is a loud noise.
When the diaphragm is open you hear normally.
Useless in an indoor range but cheap at Wallyworld.

I like the Peltor Ultimate 10. At the time I bought them they had a very high rating for decibel reduction for their cost. I'd like an electronic set for shooting when there are alot of others on the line but don't have them yet... I sure would like to see some "kid size" muffs.

The Howard Leight electronic earmuffs are good quality, easy on batteries and have one controller that works both sides. They are flat and compact too.

Plugs and muffs if I'm shooting a rifle with a compensator or something with a lot of blast like a .357 Mag pistol etc. Otherwise just foam plugs that I buy at Walgreens. The muffs I've got are Browning branded, nothing special.

I'd like to get one of them fancy electronic muffs as well, but I've never been able to pull the trigger on it given the price and the fact that ammo is usually stacked nearby to those expensive muffs.

Sounds like a great Birthday or Christmas idea! I need to keep it in mind to suggest to my wife and kids.

Best,
Oly

I like muffs... but more often than not when I'm bench shooting I’ll feel them contact the comb of the buttstock...Got tired of stopping to readjust them ....so its plugs for bench.. Also ever had a muff creep up high enough that you get a surprise when your brother at the next bench lets loose? Then again it feels kinda dumb to remove the plugs to put on muffs when I practice offhand shooting...I guess I would remove them if they were a bother to me... but its nice just to put the Silencios in and foggitaboutit....Muffs stay at home now... one less thing to cart up to the firing line...

Can one assume that the electronic ear protectors respond rapidly enough to a loud/ high decible noise that no damage to the hearing occurs? Doesn't seem possible, but maybe so.

Somebody say sumfin' ?

Seriously, I'm not sure what the loss of my hearing could be the product of...shooting all those years without protection, all those times leaning over a running alcohol dragster while tuning it, standing at the starting line with the nitro cars running, or running high speed NC mills for years...but any ear protection is better than none. Funny thing though...my hearing loss appears to be worst at the tone level of my wifes voice.

I like them a bit more than my older-model Peltor's, for those very reasons, but with any model, the newer ones are better than most any other model's older ones.

Of course the BEST thing would be one of these for each firearm you shoot:

Safer and more sensible most of the time; back when they cost $20, putting a $200 'tax' on them was just government treachery to get around not being able to legitimately 'ban' them. Suppressors are one area that England has FAR better gun laws than we do...

Be careful what you wish for. I too think the government should get out of the taxing suppressor business. However if we do a good enough job of convincing them how great they are they will keep the tax and add a law requiring them on ALL firearms. How would an nice Turnbull 1886 look with a "can" hanging on the front? And imagine a Colt SA quick draw rig? I wonder if you can color case a suppressor?

I always double up, plugs and muffs. 28-30 db is all you're going to get from any one method and that's not nearly enough.

I bought several muffs from Elvex, they are good and prices are wholesale.

Antietamgw, these folks have kid's muffs.

http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/index.html

I just received my first order from them. 1 pair of Peltor muffs, and
two Peltor "hygiene kits", which replace the sealing rings and foam.
Prices were good, the muffs are fine, and the rebuild kits worked
just as advertised. Yes, they charged for shipping. Their service
was first-class and it only took two or three days to get here.

Their selection is impressive.

I'd be for elimination of the tax, and elimination of any other 'NFA' regulations; NEVER in favor of any 'mandates', especially if they involved buying something with a $200 tax.

(...although 'mandating' a firearms purchase IS sort of an intriguing concept...kind of like publishing a registry of non-gun-owners... )

Peltor No.7's. I need to get a few extra before they change the design. My understanding is the 6's often have problems with the electronics and will go out on you. I've not used any other electronics but I'm sure there are other good setups.

Many (20 or so) years ago I stopped by a ear doctors (?) office in a Mall in Ocala Florida. I was shooting a lot of IPSC, indoor bowling pin and law enforcement shoots. I asked if he had any suggestions and he recommended custom molded ear plugs with an insert that let you hear normal conversations, yet it blocked the "bad" effects of shooting. For a very small sum of money, he took a mold of each ear and I had the plugs within a few weeks. I have used those plugs countless times in my LE career and for sighting in all kinds of firearms as well as competition shooting. I still have them and they are all I use. They work.
