Interesting, although I think I'd pass on either version...

Looks kinda cool.
I would have thought it difficult to make one of those things any more useless, but with a collapsing stock it might actually become a somewhat useful militia tool. It would certainly come under NFA scrutiny...

Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.

I think I would prefer a nice Trapper version, and there is no way I would consider plastic on a lever!

ATF would say NoNo, your not allowed to have a forward grip on a pistol. I would rather have a full size anyway.
Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
Neither.
I worked on a Rossi Ranch Hand for a local dealer and had the opportunity to fire it once when I was at the club at the same time as the buyer. It's a toy, IMO. Although if one fired enough rounds through the RH one would get proficient at shooting from the hip. Sorta like me shooting 800-900 rds from the hip through my Sterling Mk4 subgun. It's remarkable what you can hit from the hip with enough practice.
As for owning a RH, not me. I'll take another 16" Rossi 92, this time in 45 Colt.

try to shoot one of the darn things accurately. Take a straight stock trapper, and just try to one hand the thing.

My "tactical" guns are my 1894 with 10 rounds of .44mag, or the 1895 Cowboy with 10 rounds of 45-70, or the 9422M with (I think) 11 rounds of 22 mag.

I'm getting a Chiappa Takedown Mare's Leg.jkbrea wrote:Old school and modernized. Your choice.

I'm not particularly fond of the grossly overpriced Chiappas but they're the only ones to my knowledge who offer a Takedown model.
I don't know how far "it's a pistol" NFA workaround can be stretched before the BATFE calls foul.
Seems like they let the pistol classification of the Ranch Hands & Mare's Legs slide but if more short barreled rifle/pistol hybrids hit the market & they spot a new trend emerging the feds might snap the choker leash & the whole pistol/short barreled rifle thing could wind up in the courts.
American freedom activists have done very, very well with expanded "Shall Issue" CCW rights in most states but areas where we have lost so far is on magazine/clip limits and the FFL & NFA firearms nonsense brought in by the Gun Control Act of 1968.
I consider the Gun Control Act of 1968 as well as the magazine limits temporary losses of ground to be regained in later fights.

I think the Mare's leg is cool looking (traditional), but as far as practical and wanting one. That's another story.

A week or so ago this topic came up, and I thought just maybe it would make a nice home defense gun, but after looking at it again, im not sure I could hit the Broad side of a Barn with it. The newfangled one on the bottom is just plain Ugly !kimwcook wrote:I think the Mare's leg is cool looking (traditional), but as far as practical and wanting one. That's another story.

Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
I agree. I don't think I would want one. Can't really handle like a rifle or pistol. Like shooting a pistol grip shotgun I suppose. The bottom is just a photo shopped pic. I only posted it because I thought it was kind of funny.Bigahh wrote:A week or so ago this topic came up, and I thought just maybe it would make a nice home defense gun, but after looking at it again, im not sure I could hit the Broad side of a Barn with it. Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
All I can see is Steve Mc Queen with the original style weapon on Wanted Dead or Alive back in the days of my youth. Mattel made a toy one once and that would be about as for as I'd go! Steve made his prop weapon look cool blasting away with blanks, but I'm sure with live rounds it would be a nightmare to shoot and hit anything other than a bus at 20 feet!

Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
Like many of us, I grew up with the Steve McQueen show. I'd like one of the original (Chiappa/Rossi) style as a fun presentation and conversation piece, and to fondle just for grins...+1 not so much to shoot. Functionally, less (or no more) capacity and can't imagine any handier and that much more effective in any real circumstance than a 7.5 Colt or Ruger. Although the original was basically "un-sighted," I think I'd still opt for the Chiappa with its better wood and traditional carbine ladder rear sight. Since I'm not likely to get one anyway, might as well fantasize about the pricier and fancier one!
Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
Just bought at Wallyworld, the Wanted dead or alive for $5.00 Will be fun to watch again.
Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
I want one. Still have my MARX Toy version with its "holster". I'd take a Legacy Bounty Hunter model, though. It has the correct second version lever. Still would have to be "corrected"; shorter barrel, and no sights. California's Safe Handgun Roster prevents purchasing one. That and NO money.

Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
Why does everyone assume that you have to shoot it from the Hip?
Put a Ghost Ring Aperture sight on it; Hold it at eye-level--Approximately where it would be, if it had a Stock.....
Use an Isometric "Spreader Hold" (Forward hand pulling Forward; Rear hand pulling back--As if you're trying to 'Spread' the Pistol ) And fire away.
Unless you really want to become a Hip-Shooting Specialist; don't shoot at Targets any farther away than you can Spit (Normal--Not Tobacco Juice--Which would probably be about half again as far.....)
An ambitious Hip Shot might want to work up to that range.

Re: Mares Leg - Original or Tactical
In my experiences in shooting with two different mare's legs, they can be fired accurately from an eye level position using the sights.
I'm not sure an aperture would work particularly well, you do not want the gun near your face (or eye) when you shoot it, and aperture sights lose efficiency the farther you move them away from the shooting eye.
The "Spreader" hold isn't much benefit here, in my opinion.
Particularly if using a caliber with heavy recoil, you'll need both hands & arms to resist rearward travel on ignition. Pushing with one & pulling with the other isn't advisable.
Besides which, best accuracy is obtained by shooting with both hands together around the gun's wrist, not by trying to shoot it like a rifle.
