All I have is an Old Town Pack canoe. I love it. Don't get out in it enough. Not a white water boat though.

Depends on the situation entirely ------ sometimes, a 10' plastic BAssCat with a trolling motor is where its at ------- occasionally, a blast across the water in a Youngblood hull with a 454 Chev is the order of the day

14' Lavro drift boat. For rivers...will take much rougher water than I would ever care to row in...

Re: Truck or Jeep boat?
I had an Old Town Loon that I used for Bream fishing (Aussie Bream, I believe you guys have a different fish with the same name). I never took it into rough water but guess it would handle it, I loved it as a stable platform for fishing with lures. I sure do miss that little boat and would still have it if a back injury hadn't made it impossible to lift things onto the roof rack.

As i get older buying seems easier than building but i`ve thought about building one, a glass bottom boat would be cool.Jeff H wrote:Pitchy, I see you making a boat before I see you buying one.Pitchy wrote:15 Foot Grumman canoe but may buy a Jon boat.

Here's what we use, pop 'em up on top of the car and away we go!

This boat is so stable that I can stand up in it to fish if I want to! If you haven't tried kayaking, you just gotta' go!

When I go in the backcountry I load the pack animal with a 1or 2 man inflatable rafts lets me get to areas on the lakes near the cliffs and inlets where the big brookies and cutts hang out gave up years ago on those float tubes for rafts. danny
Re: Truck or Jeep boat?
I load my Ocean Kayak in the back of my truck and use a hitch extender. I've packed it to Sea Of Cortez-Mexico, Southern California coast, Lake Mead/Colorado River and trout fishing in Utah.
The only problem I can see with that Santa Cruz Kayak is that it looks very slow, if you cover large areas of water you want something that is fairly fast.

This is the one I bought but I had to get a Hemi engine in the Jeep to tow it. Naaaa. Fishing and professional sports is something I don't do. Sorry 'bout being an ah on your post.-------Sixgun

Hmmm... That one would easily solve the annoying problem we have around here with some inconsiderate Jet Fleas, oh, I mean, Jet Skis...

Re: Truck or Jeep boat?
In our family we have 2 Old Town Otter kayaks, 2 homemade pirogues and one 16' Blue Hole canoe. The Otters are technically my 2 oldest daughters and one of the pirogues I made for the wife and it's hers but on any given river trip or day fishing on a small lake I might be found in any of those boats.
The best for fishin out of are the Otters and I'm thinkin of commandeering one of them and installing some extras. Rod holders and the such.

Re: Truck or Jeep boat?
I LOVE my Grumman 17 footer "Makule Akule" (mah-koo-leh, ah-koo-leh). I found her on local Craigslist several years ago, and pimped her Hawaiian style by adding an outrigger for extra stability since I use her for offshore fishing, and as a dive platform when spearfishing. I also added an outboard motor side mount. I've had her out chasing birds in pursuit of Ahi (Yellowfin Tuna), and you should see the looks I get from guys in their $80,000 fishing machines.

Re: Truck or Jeep boat?
My newest addition is a 15'8" Gloucester style rowing dory to which a added an outboard engine well to (and named in my mom's honor) for days when my back gives me too much trouble to row. Very seaworthy design for rougher seas.

Re: Truck or Jeep boat?
I have a Sevylor fish runner that purportedly will take 5-6 people- who must be midgets. A couple of normal blokes can use it as a fishing platform comfortably.
I added a Sevylor canoe to my equipment this year- a two man- problem is an inflatable canoe needs two people- or it bends like a banana- result- fishing with a cold wet bum

Re: Truck or Jeep boat?
Blaine,
Love your Drifter!
First time since I was 11 years old I've been without some kind of boat.
To me this is very disturbing.
I've been looking at the kayaks and canoes and just can't make up my mind.
I really like the "SportsPal" with the flat transom ( 15' Makobe, http://ovck.com/1CanoesA5.htm ) I can put a little outboard on and
go or a smallish kayak I can throw on my ladder rack and paddle off.
too many options but I gotta do something!

That would be great if you could put that dory back into good use. I'd love to see the pictures of your dory.oldguy wrote:ji. i had a shock dory like yours for many years. it was restored and given to a friend. i have

This dory was given to me the previous owner being the second owner, and he not being into rowing just let it sit for years in his backyard a reservoir. In fact when waters levels rose in the reservoir and the dory drifted off he did not even bother looking for it so it drifted around for a very long time (one guy told me 3 years) before I recovered it. I assumed the hull was glassed plywood but when I cut the transom for the motor mount I found it had a foam core so very well built. While restoring this dory I had it on saw horses upside down. One evening we had a particularly powerful wind storm with gusts up to 50 knots. One gust lifted this 125 pound dory up off the saw horses and it wound up landing on some tree stumps along the bank of the stream several feet below. I feared the worst as far as hull damage but she barely suffered a scratch, I was very impressed with the solidity of her construction.
