Leveritis strike hard!!!!! Help with decision

OK, currently I own the following lever actions

1884 Marlin CB 45LC
1884 Marlin CB 32 H&R Mag
1895 Marlin CB 45-70 (Custom)
1892 Puma 454 Casull/45LC
336 Marlin 30/30 (Soon to be customized with octagon barrel and new wood)
39 Marlin Mountie 22RF

I have an option on the following:
Winchester 1886 Take Down (Japan) 45-70, used $1000 (99%)
Winchester 1892 20" Take Down (Japan) 45LC, brand new in box $999

I simply want to add a TD to the collection, and it would pack real nice on my motorcycle......
Deer, pig, coyote hunting is on the menu for this new rifle.

What say you?

Wish I could do both!

But that 1892 is sure a nice handling rifle........and as much as I'm a fan of the 45-70, I reload and shoot much more 45LC from rifles and revolvers.

And if he's going fast enough, he cold almost make up the difference in velocity.

Putting either together while on the fly might be the real trick.

I know I am not much help, but I wouldn't be even if I were being serious. My taste in fine arms is limited to admiring the ones others have borne the burden to acquire and maintain. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate them, just that I don't have them.

Let's say someone were going to force me to take one for free though,..... I would have a hard time walking away from a 45-70 for that dollar's difference. It's one I don't and have not had and have always wanted to. I have shot others' 45-7os and am truly infatuated with the old round. .45 Colt is no slouch, would be more "practical" for me, but I could have a .45 Colt in anything, about any time and I have had some nice .45 Colt handguns. I guess I'd lean toward the "big one."

You seem to have everything pretty much covered by caliber so either one would be a double. I don't have one but I'm partial to the '86. The sound of that action as it cycles is just music to my ears. But a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do.

I would get the 92 in .45 Colt, because I'd wind up shooting it more often. I would still have a .45-70 for when I needed long range or extra power or just wanted to make more noise. The .45 Colt from a rifle will do for most anything if you use proper bullets.

the '86 IMO. Far, far more practical than the .45 Colt in the 1892 TD unless you're playin' cowboy at CAS matches and you've already got that covered... (twice to point out the obvious). Aesthetically, either will be fun... you'll get more shootin' in with .45Colt than the .45-70 as the price of ammo is just that much less... On the other hand, the .45-70 can be loaded to .45Colt levels just as easily as the .45Colt can approach .45-70 levels... but I ain't sure I'd want to be attempting that in a TD.

Do you have any idea how long it took me to find a new in box 32H&R? Nope, it won't be for sale for some time..........Great little rifle and the 32H&R is a dear cartridge to me. I have a half dozen pistols so chambered (Including one of Bill Jordan's custom Ruger Single 6) and I'm building a double rifle on a 410 SXS shotgun for this cartridge..........

A Shooter can never have too many .45-70's.

Or, if you want to go with a different calibre, start looking for the venerable .38-40 Winchester. The more I shoot my Ruger Buckeye .38-40/10mm Blackhawk, the more I am impressed with the old Winchester round.

Just food for thought . You can load the 45 colt up to maybe 44 magnum levels in the 92 and have more rounds then the 45-70 will carry.On the other hand if you are going to do less shooting and need more power the 45-70 with it heaver bullets should handle any thing.Would be hard for me to walk away from either one.

Roy, as nice as it admittedly is, that Model 86 is gonna feel twice as heavy as your Marlin .45-70 - I would advise you get the Miroku Model 92TD.

I put the 1886 on hold until I can get up to Maine to check it out.......If it is really in 98% condition, I'll take it home.........

The '92 is without a doubt my favorite lever gun and the .45 Colt will be cheaper to shoot and easier on the shoulder for sure. But NOTHING lever action bespeaks POWER like an '86. I happen to like mine quite a bit. If I could only buy one right now I'd grab the '86.

Well............I drove the hour and a half up to Kittery Maine and to "Kittery Trading Post" to look at the 1886TD that they were holding for me. The rifle was selling for $999 and was in 99.9% condition..........But it just didn't "speak" to me. The wood was extremely bland. No figure whatsoever and plywood type grain. The blueing looked more like paint than a nice deep blueing. I just didn't fall in love........It's still there for someone else to buy.

So then I looked at the 1892TD with 20" barrel. This was much nicer, but not great. There were a couple of Italian jobs there also. A few in 45LC Winchester 1892. Beautiful wood, beautiful case coloring, extremely smooth actions. But not a TD and I really want a TD.........

So I left empty handed........The search continues......

I'm not sure what the 92 TD would do that the 94 Marlin and Puma won't do, except be a takedown. I've always thought the 86 was something unique and special, but they are big and heavy by comparison. So the thing that I would suggest as different, useful and versatile would be a Marlin 95 conversion to TD.
