Most 'universal' guns - i.e. ones 'everybody' has...?

Post by AJMD429 »

I found when in college (in the 70's) that there were a few record-albums pretty much everyone had, regardless of what kind of music they liked most - i.e. everyone had "Magical Mystery Tour" from the Beatles, "Aqualung" from Jethro Tull, or even "Tapestry" from Carole King, and some others.

I think it's the same with firearms.

For instance, it seems like almost everyone has a Ruger 10/22, whether they are a levergunner, bolt-action guy, bench-shooter, big-game hunter, trap-shooter, or whatever.

It seems that there are some guns almost everyone has:
  • Rimfires: Ruger 10/22, Ruger Mk-I or Mk-II pistol

    Handguns: doesn't everyone have a 1911...?

Rifles: everyone has either a Marlin 336 or Winchester 94, don't they...?
What other guns do you think are 'universal' ones that are like that?

I don't like internet "surveys" about who has what guns, but I'd bet if everyone on this forum were to list their firearms (please don't!), there would be some that maybe 50% of us own, or maybe 75% of us, even. Of course on THIS forum, it would be likelier that some of the leverguns would be the common-denominator, but I wouldn't be surprised if the commonest-owned firearm among us might be something like the Ruger 10/22, or even an AR-15!

I think you are right for the most part.
Although I don't now and never had a 10-22. They just never interested me. I do have a 22 rifle though, a Win 9422 and a couple rimfire hand guns one of which is a Ruger Standard Auto.
I have had but don't currently have a 1911. I will again though.
And, yes I've had 94 Wins in 30-30s.

The other rifle I think most folks have a bolt action 30-06.

Ruger Single-Six might be substitued for the MkI or II. I currently don't have either, but I have owned a Single Six. I'd never had a 10-22 until my Dad passed away, but I've plinked with quite a few that belonged to friends.

Almost everybody has a 12 ga of some sort. I agree on the 10-22 I have one too. As for a lever 30-30 almost everybody I know has one either a Marlin or Win. Up here in Canada everybody had a Cooey 22 either a single shot or bolt repeater and a model 84 single shot shotgun in some caliber.

Pretty much what he said.

Handguns, I think you'd be surprized at the number of Ruger SA and S&W or clone DAs around. I bet there are millions of .38 smith revolvers alone.

Yep, me gottem the 10/22, Mark I, 336, Mossy 500, Remmy 870, Remmy 1100 (predates the 11-87), single six and so on. I think the OP nailed it, there are just some things a shooter needs.

Of course a good 30-06 bolt gun, a 1911, and a big bore single action are must have. Then again, let's not forget a good .357 DA revolver (well I guess a .38 spl could be substituted).

Mostly, I think shooters sorta end up with the classics for the same reason they became classics. They work.

I am a late comer to two of those I used to say "everyone has except me..." - the 10-22 (two of 'em even) and Single Six (.22). Not everyone I know has a 1911--including myself though "next" on my list--but it's a close one, and I think that'd run 6th place.behind a .30-30 - 3rd - and Remington or Ithaca shotgun - 4th and S&W .38, 5th (the latter should probably be higher) - on the "universal" list...especially if you said "has...or at one time had." A Blackhawk (NM or OM) .357 is should be in the top 10, I'd think--I'll substitute my New Vaquero(s) in for that entry--right after an '06 and the oft-mentioned Ruger Mark-series .22 autoloaders. A K or L framed .357 and/or anunspecified wondernine (these days) might finish the list off.

I really think there are way to many guns, new and used, around to have any really "universal" guns in today's world. The 10/22 comes close as does the 870. But there are tons of Mossy and Ithaca fans out there too that will fight ya tooth and nail over the reign of the 870. Centerfire bolt guns? You'd have to be kidding yourself to think there is any far and away favorite there. Leverguns are basically limited buy choice not be preference IMO. Sure some like Winchester, some Marlin and still others the 92 clones but I've never be able to get a pulse on which is the most popular.

We could divide up into class (12ga. pump, .22 semi, centerfire bolt etc etc) instead of brand or model but that kinda takes any sort of fun or challenge away doesn't it? I mean come on, very few in the gun world don't have a semiauto .22 or 12ga. pump.

I'm going to suggest universal "types."

I have:

A bolt-action .30-06
A lever-action .30-30
A semi-auto .22LR rifle
A semi-auto 22LR pistol
A 1911 pistol in .45ACP
A double action revolver in .38Spl
A pump-action shotgun in 12GA

I have others, but these seem to best fall under the universal criterion.

Agree on the 10/22 - and apparently, given the sales figures, it is a pretty safe bet we are all right!

I know some gun owners that don't own a handgun. If they do, often it is for self-defense (if they only have one). Anymore, I'd be hard pressed to call one universal. Yes, the 1911 - for gun guys, but for the "general gun owner", it is probably one of the wonder-nines.

I'd bet that most gunowners end up with a shotgun, probably a pump 12 gauge, pretty early on. The Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 can probably be found in most collections.

Also given the sales figures, it is probably safe to say that the AR-15 is now one of the most common centerfire rifles owned. Given how many deer have been taken with the ol' .30-30 round, the Winchester 94 or Marlin 336 have to be in the list as well.

I agree with the 870 as being the shotgun. Another gun to consider is the Marlin model 60 22lr. There were alot of these things sold back in the day and are probably still around shootin as good as the day they were brought home. The 30-30 Winchester or the 336 marlin is a must have. The Remington 700 or 742 in 30-06 is a must have. S&W model 66 .357. A wonder 9 auto. A 1911 45acp. I also think that a person needs a big bore, in a lever action or single shot like a 45-70 just because. Do y'all think the AR platform is to be considered as a must have in your safe? I have one and I love mine.

What am I missing?

I agree with the above, and have the same basic guns in my arsenal, repalcing the Ruger Mark-xxx with a Browngin Buckmark. Otherwise spot on. I think that for the younger generations, the 1911 gets added fairly late in the game, and it is more common to see a plastic semi auto in the 9mm persuasion filling the personal defense handgun slot.

In my neck of the woods, prior to the AR-15 explosion, the Mini-14 would have been on the list. It seemed to be a very prolific seller. I got rid of mine in favor of a couple ARs, but most of my firends/family/acquaintances still have one in their collection. I wonder if that was was more a regional thing though.

The preferred format for the US Military (well, unless the SCAR, ACR - etc start seeing wide use, but that'll take decades) available at prices a lot of us can afford if we save out lunch money for awhile (an inexpensive one starts at around $650) that shoots inexpensive ammo ($6 - $7 a box for brass cased reloadable 55 grain plinking ammo)
The AR is a soft shooting rifle with good sights (if its an A2) that is easy to teach new shooters the basics with and is generally accurate enough to be very entertaining ------

yeah, i gues i would consider it a "must have" Its this generation's version of an M1 Carbine (but admittedly a lot more expensive than the CMP carbines that filled closets across the land in days gone by)

True around here as well. I sold mine before I had an AR-15, but just needed the money, but once funds were up again, I replaced it with a Ranch Rifle.

I agree with all of your choices and at one time or another I have owned all the firearms mentioned so far, some, several times over.

Ive had several 10-22s
a dozen 870s or 500s
more 1911a than I count
ARs, M1As, Grarands a plenty
lots of 94s in various forms
336s, yep, them too.
Bolt guns in 270, 30-06, 300 winmag, .375, .458 lott, 303, 8mm, 7mm, 6mm, in Remington, Winchester, Ruger etc

But of the whole list, I only have one 1911 currently. No pump 12 gage, no 10-22, no ar or military rifles, no 94s, or 336s and my only bolt gun is a .458Lott.

My collection has taken on an exclectic lot that apparantly no one else cares to have. lol

My shotguns are double barrels. My .22 cal is a single shot. My lever is a 92 copy, (though a marlin in .44mag is on the way), my primary rifle is a double in a metric cartridge, my bolt gun is a stopping rifle, my hanguns are specialized in function.

One that we haven't mentioned is a bb gun or pellet gun?

I'm an accumulator of old Smith's, yet I have a friend who like Colts and won't own a Smith. I think its a Ginger vs MaryAnn sorta thing. I know fellows who like both, and would probably take both Ginger and MaryAnn, but they're just being greedy.

I like Colt DAs too; a Police Positive 38 Special and an Officers Model Target 22LR. I had two others, a 1901 Army 38LC and a New Service in 38WCF; both had issues that I didn't want to deal with.

Which is why I have always prefered MaryAnns to Gingers; the Gingers sure are pretty but the the MaryAnns have a lot less issues to deal with.

I'm really surprised that so many included a .30-06 on there list of "everybody has one". I would of thought that the .270 would of over taken it years ago for I rarely see a .30-06 bolt gun but .270's are laying all over the place. Personally I have neither and will own neither so I'll be one of the few odd balls I guess.

Maybe it should be "the most popular gun everybody HAS HAD." :)
I don't own a 10-22, a 1911, or most of the popular guns, but I have owned them previously.
Just seems as I got older I narrowed my interests in collecting/shooting guns to those I really enjoyed, and got pleasure from. The 10-22 is a great gun, but I lost interest in just blasting, and wanted something that was more accurate, and looked nicer. It got replaced by several old single shots, and a Win. 52.
The 1911 thing soon got replaced by a S&W single action semiauto in the form of the old IPSC model .45, and I've never regretted it.
I have had a old custom built Enfield sporter in .30-06 for longer than just about anything, and it will probably go to one of my heirs before it ever gets sold.

I have a 10/22 but am not fond of it. Keep it around for guests. I much prefer my four Remington 66. Much more accurate and reliable. I believe the reason the 10/22 was such as success is that the conventional wooden stock and the detachable magazine made it much more amenable to 'customizing'. Seems that evryone that gets one wants to change it.

I don't like the M1911 because I abhor grip safeties. My favorite .45 SA is an ASAI OnePro.

My favorite SA pistol is a Woodsman Match Target (3rd) 6".

First shotgun I ever bought was a 'custom' M12 by Simmons. Beautiful wood and frinish but pumps and I never worked well together and I sold it when the M1100 originally was introduced. Now my fun shotguns are all break actions (SS, O/U, S/S). Have three SA shotguns but they are are 'working' house guns.

Don't have any S/A revolvers anymore. All are now D/A. Many S/A feel good, look good, and shoot good but I am too impatient to put up with the antiquated loading/unloading process. I am getting too old to waste precious time on such nonsense. If some one made centerfire S/A revolvers with swing out cylinders likes the one used on DA revolvers I would probably buy some.

I would of thought that the .270 would of over taken it years ago for I rarely see a .30-06 bolt gun but .270's are laying all over the place. Personally I have neither and will own neither so I'll be one of the few odd balls I guess.

Well, this could start a whole bunch of ranting on both sides, but, the 270 is really just a second class cartridge. It may shoot a bit flatter, but it's terminal effect just isn't there.
