OT--Yet another spinner

Post by Pitchy »

This is a very early style called a Indian Head spinning wheel, why i don`t have a clue.
It has a Indian head drive on it so now i`ve built all three drive designs.
Thanks. :)

Great work, Pitchy!
That is like the one I have wanted to build for years and saved a steel wheel barrow wheel for.

Pitchy,

Rangerider7 has his Texas museum in his home. If you are not careful you'll have an early Americana museum in yours.

That is one heck of a spinning wheel. I like it. Now, considering it's mostly wood, what's the oil can for?

Hey Joe.. Ever see a fire started by a guy spinning a stick between his palms thats pressed against another piece of wood?... You know.. Like the survivor man types all do... Pitchy's oil will keep the friction down so there's no flare ups...

OK, that sounds like a good idea. We don't want no toasted spinning wheels do we.

Looks cool, I really like the shape of that one. When the topic said another spinner, my mind thought of spinning targets or a small chick, must be the old biker in me. Did you fix the gong you broke with the 86?.

Well .............. my wife has commented many times she'd love to have one. That would clear out some floor space

Yeah, I understand that. With all the work you put into them it would be like trying to decide which favorite rifle to get rid of.

Good one

A little learned info for anyone interested in building one.

I`ve geared these down so they twist real slow by by putting bigger flyer or bobbin pulleys on them.
A standard old spinning wheel can be geard at a ratio of 20-1 because them people were serious about making a lot of yarn. This wheel is geared at 3-1 and is fun to spin on and relaxing. A higher geared one will twist so fast and try and pull the yarn out of your hand.

I made a new brake knob today that is easier to reach, the other one was two close to the flyer and would hit my knuckles if not careful.
The brake is used to slow the speed of the flyer rotation so the yarn is drawn onto the bobbin on this style. The other ones the brake is on the bobbin.

Been buying on line from Paridise fibers in Washington for the wool, some friends raise llamas and gave us a bunch of they`er fleeces.
