Another "New to Me "

Post by 6pt-sika »

Finally picked up my 1970 Medallion Round Lever rifles !
This makes the third of these 1970 rifles I have with the Medallion and the round lever !

Took some pics after I cleaned it up some and waxed the wood !

Also got some Saeco #433 300 grainers loaded with 49 grains of IMR8208 . That load shot very nicely in my 1968 "Target" rifle so I'll give it a shot in this one for starters !

When I first saw the auction pics on the internet I was sure this rifle had a nice old Redfield on top of it based on the three knurled rings on the outside of the eyepiece . O was hoping it was a Redfield Traditional 4x or possibly 6x . But this one isn't so bad once I cleaned it up !

The reticle in this thing is kinda like a post with the same thing to the right and left and no crosshair above . Little different but I think it should do well on paper and even better on deer or bear !

While I was at the shop today I put a couple more coats of Johnson's Paste Wax on the stock and forend and buffed the heck out of it with an old T shirt . Now it for lack of a better term "shines like new money"

Last year I came across a Model 39 Centenial (looks like the one on your rifle is also a centenial medallion). I hadn't even heard of them up to that point. Apparently no one else knew what it was either. After finding out from you fellas what it was, I went back and grabbed it. So now I look at every Marlin on the rack looking for others. I don't know exactly why, but I just think the Centenials are kinda cool.

I do like the buttstock on your's. That's not something you see very often, and would sure make using a scope easier.

"Supposedly" all the 1970 rifles had that little medallion on them somewhere . At the moment I have five 444's that were made in 1970 . This one and two others identical to it . Another with the medallion and a squared lever like the 1971 rifles and finally another with the squared rifle and NO medallion which I assume was made late 1970 in preperation for the 1971 market .

Just got back from the range from trying this one out with the Saeco #433 300 grain FN GC and 49 grains of IMR8408 !

Of the five groups I shot at 100 yards they averaged 1 1/4" . Not to bad for a stabb in the dark so to speak !

I wanna tell you though that scope is a dog to shoot well on paper . The reticle has a thick crosshair on both sides and where a post would be . However they do not connect . So you need a target with about a 5 inch black circle and hash marks at all 4 spots so as to line this *** up correctly ! Anyway I figured it out well enough for deer and bear !

Here are a couple pics from the range today !

I was a little off on my group aggregate yesterday !

My first 3 shot group measured 1.468" , the 2nd was .796" , the 3rd was .653" and the 4th was .998" for an overall aggregate of .979"

I think that will be just fine !
