OT-Usefull home made tool.

Post by Pitchy »

On the last spinning wheel i made i pegged the 2x4s together, i took a hole saw and cut the bottom out of it then turned down a piece of well pipe to the same diamiter and welded it to it. Then i put a bolt on a washer and welded that on the end so i could put it in the drill. All this being done so i could get the depth for three inch pegs on the end of those 2x4s.
The only thing it doesn`t have is the center drill bit to hold it center when starting the drilling so had to wear a heavey leather welder glove to steady it. After it started cytting no problem, worked good, after drilling the peg then just went around the bottom with a hand saw to cut off the scrap.

This was a 1 1/4 hole saw, it makes a peg on the end of the board not a seperate peg like a hole saw cuts.
I first cut the end of the 2x4 so it looked like a T. then sawed down the square center with this tool.
It saved the day in this project. :)
Thanks guys.

Pitchy, to get a cean start without the wobble or glove, you can use a regular, unaltered hole saw of the same size with the pilot drill to get the hole started, then go to the extended one after the saw itself started cutting.

Good idea tho, it's a drag having to stop and chisel the plug out of the hole to be able to drill deeper with regular hole saws.

Great idea bro.
Too be clear i`m not making the hole with this but the pin that is attached to the end of the 2x4, maybe that`s not what it`s called.

Ah, you are using it to form a dowel end.

I do that for porch posts, use a regular hole saw, and a corresponding id/od saw to make the hole for the dowelled end. I can usually make them long enough to work with the regular hole saw, but it sure would be nie to have a longer one. After running the hole saw as far as it will go to form the dowel end of the pole, I trim back the leftover pole outside the dowel part with a sawzall then bevel it with an angle head grinder with coarse sanding discs.

Another trick for starting a hole saw when the pilot bit doesnt work, sush as making a hole larger, or in your case, is to make a hole with the hole saw in a piece of scrap OSB or plywood, and attach it to your work temporarily, after the saw starts into the work, you can take the guide off.

They do make deep well hole saws with a pilot. I hade one about 7/8 and one about 1 1/4" I used to use to pass through two 2X4s if need be when stringing radio cables back when I was in that biz. I can't remember where we got em, but might be McMaster-Carr has em.

Sorry times are tough friend.

When things get to me, I try to think that there aren't many I'd want to trade places with tho. Everyone has their challenges and problems. I've been blessed, as we all have, in some way.

Have you seen this?

We use sheetmetal to bend up a jig that goes over the end of a piece of wood. Drill a hole in it the same size as the holesaw, then just put the sheetmetal over the end of your wood and clamp it to the side with C clamp. Insert the holesaw into the sheetmetal and it will hold it centered as you drill. Works perfect every time.

Pitchy are you familiar with an old time tool called a hollow auger, used to cut round tennons on the end of round stock? They are a cool collectable for woodworkers - I have only seen a couple in person and always overpriced. I may have to start shopping at Pitchy's Hollow Auger Emporium.

Put it back in the chuck and drill a hole the dia of the desired drill bit or just under, press in the the bit and tack it in or use some JB weld and you have a center drill.

Thanks, but you`d have to have a long bit for a long tenon and most of the time wouldn`t want a hole in the end of the tenon.
Glad i don`t have to make them everyday.

Pitchy,
I'm not gonna get into all of this technical stuff. This is way over my Italian head. If I need a hole, I'll just blast it with one of the 1886's I have laying around. (on a side note, I use a .22 regulary (S.S.Ruger--just hold the muzzle to the wood) for drilling 1/4" holes out in the pasture where I'm too lazy to carry out the battery powered DeWalt.

I'm with 'ya on the depression thing---its plagued me my whole life---laughter and jokes makes it go away-----------now you know why I'm the a*s I am. :D ------------Sixgun

But like has been said it could be much worse and faith will get us through. :)

No problem wcf3030 all ideas are appreciated. :)
