.357 max question

Post by kmittleman »

Hey Guys,

I was thinking of having my .357 handi rifle reamed out to .357 max. Would it still be able to shoot .357 mag / .38 sp?

Yes, it will be like .38's in a 357.

Check out graybeard's outdoor forums for all things Handi. They have their own section there.

http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/index.php?board=126.0

.357 Max is one of the most popular mods there. The .357 mag Handi's have a habit of being long throated to the point that a .360 Wesson might fit right from the factory.

Some of the Handi's are different frames, and have 'shotgun' style firing-pin holes, and primers of the much-higher-pressure .357 Maximum rounds supposedly can extrude back into the action.

Graybeard has a whole section on telling the two kinds of receivers apart.

The main problem with the 357 Max in revolvers was
flame-cutting of the top strap.

I'd think a Handi-Rifle would be a superb platform for
conversion to 357 Max. I didn't know about the firing
pin hole issue; but that aside, I vote you perform
the surgery and report back!

The 357 Max in a 14" Contender barrel is said to give near
1700fps with a 200 gr. bullet. Might the HandiRfile approach
2000? That's getting into 35 Remington territory!

And as others have said, 38 special and 357 mag should
work just fine.

You COULD use the .38 Colt cartridge if you wanted. I have a Max on a Contender as a carbine. Great chambering.

I can get 2200fps with a 200gr cast bullet in my 357max rifle. It is a very worthwhile conversion.

Huh? What's the connection between the .32 Colt and the .357 Max?

If it was sarcasm it wouldn't have been too bad an effort. I try not to go that route though. It is so hard to perceive through the fog of the internet without one's facial expression or tone of voice.

I have a Ruger Bisley 357 that is rechambered to 356 GNR. It is a 41 mag case necked down to 357. The rechamber is easy, case forming too! It also can be had in a lever gun. Very accurate with Hornady 158gr. Xtp.

I have been SOOO wanting to do a 356 GNR conversion on a Marlin lever for a long time. That would be the "cats meow" where I hunt up north.

I have a Handi-Rifle that was factory chambered in .357 Maximum. I shoot .38 Special, .357 Magnum and .357 Maximum. I even shoot round balls from .357 magnum cases.

How about a .357/44 Bain & Davis - stock .44 Mag Marlins are widely available, and the case would have even more capacity to get closer to the high-pressure .357 Max ballistics. I wonder if there's a practical .357-bulleted round based on a .45 Colt...?

I would think that would be a great mod and very easy to do.
