Browning 1895 .30-40 Krag Does It Again

Post by Shasta »

My Browning 1895 rifle in 30-40 Krag is proving quite the deer gun! This is the fourth Blacktail buck I've taken with it and none required a second shot.

I didn't get a buck last year despite a lot of effort. My knees didn't take the hiking very well either, so this year I bought myself a 1978 Honda Trail 90 motorbike and cruised the logging roads. After spotting this buck, he patiently waited for me to get off and park the bike, pull the Browning from its scabbard, chamber a round and get off the shot at a mere 25 yards!

That deer had a death wish!

Would you tell us more about your Lyman (or is it the repro) sight? I still haven't installed mine. I can't bring myself to take it to a local yahoo for drilling and tapping!
Sincerely,

Hobie

That was a VERY cooperative deer and I'll bet he will be good eating as well.

My Grandad (1889 - 1973) often hunted with his 30-40 but it didn't look as nice as yours. Most of the bluing was gone and the stock carried a few scars as well. But he shot it quite well; Grandad's far sighted vision was quite noteworthy even in his later years.

Current factory ammo is nearly all the 180 grain weight. But I recall as a kid, polishing cartridges and putting them back into the box for him. They were 220 grainers. A very long bullet with round nose tip that penetrated deeply every time. Grandad slew many mulies and elk with his 30-40.

Thank you for sharing your photo and hunting story.

Hobie,

The rear sight is a Lyman 21 repo from Providence Tool Co. It comes with the screws and even a tap to re-thread the front existing screw hole from metric to standard. I installed the sight myself. It required disassembly of the action to drill and tap the rear screw hole, the most difficult part being getting it back together again! As I recall, I had some trouble with the magazine spring installation. I also had to install a bit taller front sight, but it was worth the trouble!

Excellent, Tim. I'm counting the days 'til we go up to Dye Creek for the G1 season the last week of October. My old 1886 45-90 will make the trip with me. :)

Yep, butt-ugly antlers and way-slower than me...survival of the fittest, and I won? Go figure! Must be something to that gene pool stuff! :D

Great gun. Mike Venturino wrote a very complimentary piece for Nosler on the 30-40.

I've been wanting one of them for my 1895... savin' me pennies!

Had a chance once to buy a Winchester 95 in 30-40 Krag, manufactured the year I was born... passed and regretted it!
