Boltgun :D To be more specific, its a Remington-Keene made in 1880.

Hey guys,
I shot this bugger today and when you hit the target on the first try, right where you want it, well, its a blessing. :D No sight adjustments..........at all :D I shot 5 rounds of 11 grains of Unique (1000 fps) behind a 385 Lyman, sized .460 at 50 yards...........without even trying.....just put the sight on the target and yanked the trigger! The target is 1" square so I guess 4 shots went into 1" with a total group about 1 and 1/2"-------------first try :D

I was madder than hell as the rounds would not feed from the tube, until..............I realized there was a magazine cut-off. I flipped that baby over and she worked liked she did in 1880----a year before Billy the Kid was killed.! :D ----------------................Sixgun

My bud Tommy and I cruise on up to this auction today to have some fun. http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/aucti ... category=0 (number 193) There were a half dozen 1886's, 1873's, 1892's and so on.......

I had my heart set on a Whitney-Kennedy levergun in 45-60 that was very nice. I got off of it at 2 and it went for 3+------thousand. :o --well, not really, it was a 4K gun. The 1886's went for 8-12 hundred---cheap-but they were no finish guns, but all original. A reblued 1876 went for 7 and a half but was in bad shape before someone gave it a $29.95 gunshop reblue. Decent Trapdoor Springfields were going for 4-6----cheap. A SRC Springfield went for 14---cheap

S&W Mod. 29's, 28's, 27's went for 4-6.

Two machine guns (its great here in Pennsylvania :D ) were sold. One was a Model 1928 Thompson with an "L" drum and accessories went for 17 thousand and an M-2 Carbine went for 6 g's.

I was gettin' ready to leave when this Remington-Keene comes up. I bought it without checking it out--baaaaaaaadd move-but............I lucked out. Its a 95% gun. 5,000 were made from 1880-1888 or so.Most of these are in military configuration but this one was a fancy sporting gun, complete with pistol grip, checkering, and half round/oct barrel. Mint bore :D Perfect working order and 100% original. We get some nice guns here in Pa. :D

Watch for a range test coming soon to a Leverguns board near you. :D I did shoot it with one round as soon as I got home to make sure she worked.

I took it apart when I got home and found the number "47" on seven different parts---Its the serial number! :D ---------------Sixgun

Not to make this weird or anything, but I think that taking that rifle home and snapping those photos would have had me giggling like a kid who got something really cool for Christmas...

Very nice.

Sixgun,
That is probably one of the nicest non-leverguns I've seen. I'd like to shoot one just for the experience of it.

claybob,
Go rent or buy the movie "Crossfire Trail" with Tom Selleck. The bad guy uses one with a big long scope on it.

Yea guys, it is a strange rifle. To me, its a contemporary hybrid---under the barrel magazine tube, exposed hammer and a bolt.

I'm gonna let loose with a few rounds out in the backyard today (light loads--11 Unique-385 Lyman) and shoot 'em through my giant silencer so the AH that lives 1/4 away don't call the cops on me. I'll report back later tonight.-------------Sixgun

Hobie---Just tring to be "in line" as it is a boltgun and well, you know, some guys are very technical :D

Excellent !

And since I can't afford it you need to find a Winchester Hotchkiss Third variation Sporting Rifle to compliment this one !

And I would be willing to bet there is just such a bird in the Lancaster Bucks county area that some older gentleman has had stuffed away for any number of years

I think that's a really cool shooter in really good shape and serial #47. Wow.

Now, I'm wondering if this is really Sixgun. And, here's why I say that. In the picture showing the bare receiver, I see clean, unfaded and decent looking pair of jeans. And, the kicker, there's a book lying open on the floor. I suspect our real Sixgun "Don't need no stinking book."

I've looked that one up since it was in Seligs movie. I didn't think it was a 45-70 though, but maybe. I guess I'll watch it again. Is the gun for sale? I like it very much.

You're going to be so bored with that silly bolt gun you won't be able to
stand the sight of it. Send it my way and I promise to take really good care of it!

I can't take all of this excitement at my age, my ears are ringing and I "might"-------gotta check-------- have a woodie :D

Two super guns in two weeks and yes Ollogger, I'm past broke, but..........when something somes up that you "got to have", well, imagination takes a precedence! It pays to have friends who have lots more bucks than you do. May the Good Lord bless my friend Tommy, who owns Targetmaster. :D
Hightime--everything is for sale--this ain't no museum. Capitalism is #1 here at the Sixgun household :D CRS, for loading, there is a floorplate with a movable carrier and you just push those babies in---imigine a Model 37 Ithaca without a floorplate. and Law Dawg--its me! And yep, I need those books. I was pleasantly surprised that one of my books had the Keene in it. Its a tricky gun...until you know it and then its simple :D

6 Point---You hit a nerve with your question and one that I'm gonna test this winter---when its real cold outside. "IF" this is a trouble free gun, I just might take it out to Colorado next year to see what it can do on an elk. Now THAT would be cool--the first guy (maybe) to bust an elk with a 131 year old Remington-Keene. :D ----------------------------Sixgun

FWIW , two of the more satisfying whitetails I've ever killed were a pair of does I shot with a pair of original Marlin 1895's one in 38-56 and the other in 40-65 (with home cast bullets of course). The 40-65 was made in 1896 and the 38-56 was manufactured in 1897 . While not nearly as old as your Remington Keene , the oldest I've used to date !

Yes, but not often. And when I do, they are usually beat. On the other hand, I usually do not pay attention to these (or Remington) rifles, so I most likely passed up nice ones without even knowing what I was looking at. This particlular Remington was fluke.--------Sixgun
