MOVIES - The Cowboys

Post by Blaine »

Bought the DVD and watched it (again) last night. In the opening scene, I'm pretty sure there was a contrail in the background :P The Cowboys is still (one of) my favorite JW movie. I'm so proud of those young men at the end when they kick azz and take names.

I have it on DVD only because it's part of my JW collection. I can't stand to watch it. There was no need to kill off JW's character in the middle of the movie.

Yep, one of my favorite JW movies. As far as I know, The Cowboys and The Shootist are the only two JW westerns in which his character dies. Where there any others? :?:

Always been one of my favorite John Wayne movies, that and "Big Jake".

Saw an interview with Bruce Dern years ago. He said JW told him; "They(meaning the audiance) is going
to hate you!". Bruce said "He was right!".

I watched the tonight show shortly after I watched the movie, he had Bruce Dern on there, and he said he would NEVER kill John Wayne again.

I went to see "Big Jake" when I was nine and they showed the previews for "The Cowboys" before it was released .

When it came to Charlottesville Virginia my aunt took me to see "The Cowboys" on the big screen . Think that was in 1971 !

The Sands of Iwo Jima, The Fighting Seabees, The Wake of the Red Witch, The Sea Chase, and Reap the Wild Wind come to mind. I probably missed a few.

The Cowboys, one of two JW movies that I actually liked. The Shootist was the other. Not because he died in them... just that I thought he played JW so well.
He died in 8 films; westerns? Ain't The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance a western. Ok, his character died of natural causes.

A slight thread drift here, but does anyone else remember the reason why John Wayne had to quit playing football for U.S.C.?

One of the greats.....love it when Budger pulls out the Walker Colt. When I was stationed at Ft. Carson, I used to drive down towards Royal Gorge/Canyon City area and I had heard that alot of it was filmed out that way. Pretty country.

I thought it was a bum knee that ended the Dukes football career.

I believe he had a lower back injury. I also believe that was one of the reasons for the way he kind of walked to the side with a slight dip?? I think I am right on that?? Tom.

Can you just imagine how much fun those guys had to have had on the movie sets. Just imagine Dean Martin and John Wayne on the same set. It had to just be an unlimited amount of laughs.

I always thought the best movie set of all time would have been on of two movies. Either the John Wayne movie the Longest Day. Or the Clint Eastwood movie Kelly's Heroes. Those two movies had more Hollywood stars in them than any other movie I can think of. Could you imagine being on a movie set with Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland, and Carroll O'Connor at the same time?? Tom.

I don't think anyone's ever played amoral smarminess more consistently (and often) than Bruce Dern! Jack Elam maybe--he certainly is the epitome of the phrase "a real character," but Dern's smirky low life characters may take the prize. Even Elam occasionally (very) played a good guy!

I was always sorry that Yakima Canut couldn't follow him into the big time acting. But, he was a staggering force behind the scene for stunts and directing.

I like the westerns. We have a few of JW's, Big Jake, ElDorado, and more but I think my favorite is the Quiet Man.
