NOT LEGAL IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: CA, HI, IL, MA, MD, MN, O

Post by AJMD429 »

Just got an e-mail ad from BudsGunShop about a "Puma" .22 LR - I thought it might be the levergun 92-clone, but instead it is a 1911 clone in .22 LR.

I thought some of you might be interested.

Might make a good practice or farmyard gun - hard to beat the price - $199 delivered to your FFL.

Anyhow, when I see something is "illegal in California", I figure it must be something I'd like...! 8)

Other than Chicago I think Buds is incorrect about the pistol being illegal in IL. I live here and keep my eyes open for gun law changes and to my knowledge there has been no ban passed on semi auto pistols.

That's a nice little pop gun. I just might see if my local dude can order me one from somebody other than Buds.

I have a Colt Ace, why would I want to buy a Puma? :)

Joe, I'd hold off on that one and do some reading. They are Chiappa built and the reading I did on them not long after they came out indicated spotty QC, etc. Much like what we read regarding their lever actions IIRC.

Things may have changed now that they've been out a year or so, but I'd make sure the dealer is willing to handle any issues that turn up.

If I were looking for a .22 1911, I'd check out one of the GSG 1911 .22s or the Browning that's supposed to be coming out (or maybe already is).

The legality in some places has to due with mag capacity. In NY 10 rounds is max. In other places, guns must be submitted for a drop test, etc and some makers simply refuse to submit samples for testing.

Yup. That's the case where I live.

By the way, I took a look at one of these not too long ago. Real piece of junk, in my not so humble opinion.

I know it costs more, but why not get a full size 1911 and get a conversion kit to .22lr and have the best of both for one frame?

I believe in CA a firearm must be submitted to the State (Dept. of Justice?) to be tested/examined to be allowed to be sold in CA. With regular gov't red tape who knows how long it would take to OK a firearm!

BTW. I'd like to have one, Chiappa 1911 .22. I've read reports about them and they have the heft/feel of a Gov't 45, fairly accurate, cheaper than an Ace conversion, cheaper ammo, and I already have a couple 45 ACP pistolas...

If a firearm is submitted to the state of California the company pays a big sum to have it tested, doesn't get it's samples back and gets to do it all over again in 5 years.Which make some companies logically think why bother.Robbery at it's high form.

I have that setup, but (not to sound lazy or anything) it is a pain in the butt to switch-over, and I don't care if I'm using the same exact trigger-group, as I'm more plinking, or trying to 'keep familiar with the format', vs. doing some precision-trigger-control drills.

Besides, at $199, it costs less than most of the conversion kits, and you wind up with TWO active, intact, guns.

If I weren't all maxed out in the gun-buying department, I'd seriously consider one. For now, when I want a .22 LR, semiauto, I'll either have to put on the conversion (poor me, takes almost 30 seconds  ), or use my Ruger Mk-II.

This is the first time I've ever seen Minnesota on one of those 'not legal in' lists and it bothers me. There's no magazine restrictions here and there's no approval list.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Like Joe, I see no reason it would not be legal in Illinois, but I'd sure want to know if it works before I bought one!

I don't know about the first ones but I bought two of these the last time there were on sale with Bill Hicks Company. I shot them both into my bullet trap just to see if they would function. I use a variety of ammos and both did just fine. I sold both on Auction Arms and after buying, one feller ask me to get him another one.

Ten round max in the "Aloha" state too. Majority of the sheeple here worship Obama & Clinton, and look to Kalipornia as a role model state... go figure.

A 1911 / 22RF is a great firearm. I wanted a dedicated 1911/22 so I built one up from parts.

Sometimes the merchant has fauly advice, on what's legal, where.

For instance, in my state, black powder/muzzleloaders, both long/short, and rifled or smoothbore, are treated by my state's laws, re- buying selling, shipping, etc, about the same as a pair of smeakers - i.e., there are NO prohibitions against buying/selling/owning BP arms.

YET, Cabela's refuses to ship to me, stating that such is prohibited by the laws of my state - but Bass Pro had no such qualms.
Guess who gets NONE my business (and not just no BP arms) ?

The reason they are illegal in Il & a few other states is because of the melting temperature of the alloy they are made of. In Il that is in a "junk gun/saturday night special" law created decades ago. I have owned a couple of the Chiappa's & the quality just is not all that great. The finish is sub par & the reliability just sucks if not using high velocity ammo. I now have a GSG & love it!

I'm told the GSG is made by Chiappa.............This is basically an Air Soft / Pellet Gun manufacturer. I have a GSG MP5 Clone rifle and it has some major design faults. It will fire on a partially open bolt and I have the 22RF cases to prove it. I had to have the barrel replaced from a lodged bullet when it blew out the side of a 22RF case.

They sent me a new barrel and upon disassembling the rifle I was very surprised to see very poor materials used and extremely rough machining.

YMMV, but be aware............

I've been thinking about one of these - though it will have to wait until after holidays.

I was thinking about getting one with an accessory rail and a threaded barrel.
