Great to read, thanks Kim.

It remains to be seen if no good deed goes unpunished...The rescuers helped turn the Honda Accord upright in the Logan River, and one man shot out the car's window with a handgun and cut a seat belt to help free the children after the Saturday afternoon accident, patrol Lt. Steve Winward said.

Why this remark? Is there a reason you perceive he did something wrong?Old Ironsights wrote:It remains to be seen if no good deed goes unpunished...
All Willden did was use a readily available tool to accomplish what is a difficult task when time was of the essence! Have you ever tried to break a tempered car window deliberately? It isn't easy! When seconds could have made the difference between the children living or dying a trained, former LEO, did what he felt was necessary to expeditiously enter the vehicle!
If he hadn't done this it is likely the others who stopped to help would not have been able to right the vehicle. There simply isn't anything to gran on a car, and hands have little purchase on wet paint. The broken window is likely all that enabled turning the vehicle and completing the rescue.
Interestingly, while the majority of U.S. Hwy 89 in Logan Canyon has guard rails, for some reason this stretch only, literally, a few feet from the river, and on a curve, for some reason does not have a guard rail.

Believe it or not, people can and actually do get prosecuted and/or sued for doing the right thing. That is the gist of Mr. Ironsight's comment.

Great story.
Those kids would probably not have survived if that had happened in England, no handguns and very few people carry pocket knives.

Exactly my point... If this happened IL or NJ or many other places he would have allready been charged. At least in UT he's got pretty good odds of not getting his life ruined for saving someone else's...

Re: Heroism at it's best
Amazingly, the gun use got modestly good remarks by normally not-so-neutral media folk. Applauding the rescuers, the Today show gal said, to paraphrase, "it was amazing they had the (right) tools available, including a handgun..." As I say, maybe modest, but that's praise coming from NBC. ( ) remark = maybe rose colored recollection on my part. In any event, +1 these are truly praiseworthy heroes.
