OT- Went Fishin' Today
Water looked nice so decided to drop everything and take the Makule Akule (my outrigger canoe) out for a few hours. went several miles offshore and water was like a lake for several hours but then got caught outside when the Kona Winds suddenly whipped up. Wet and bouncy ride home but caught a 4.5 lb. UKU (Gray Snapper) and a 2 lb. Moana Ukali (Rainbow Goatfish) both being delicacies. Better than work!

Way to go Ji,
I need to get a larger motor for my 17' so I can hit the salt. a 5 horse kicker won't hardly buck some of our tides.
Is that with Spinning rigs?

Aloha Rusty, This trip I used conventional reels a PENN Jigmaster, PENN Longbeach 67, and a Ryobi levelwind. Caught the Snapper using a Rapala CD-22 minnow in dark purple, the Goatfish I caught bottom fishing using cutting bait. I use a 3 hp Tanaka outboard and most times run it at half throttle, I personally feel no need for more power. Amazingly reliable motor.

And you look a little weird yourself !
Sounds like a fun day. Watch those winds though, I've had a few close calls on the water over the years. Be safe so you can fish another day.

Forgot to mention I also had a pod of 6 Humpback Whales swim right past me, magnificent creatures. Also saw a huge Tiger Shark almost as long as boat sunning himself (herself actually when this large) on surface the classic shark with dorsal and tail fins exposed out of water. This was in the early morning, and on the way back in in early afternoon saw a huge Green Sea Turtle easily over 300 lbs. probably pushing 100 years. Great day, the fish were a bonus, but missed my dad not being there. Thanks for the comments.
Ji,
When I was growing up down in Ft.Myers there was a fish house at Ft.Myers beach that sold sea turtle steaks. I guess that wouldn't be very PC of them now.
If you go to the Fla. Keys on the way south you can stop on Islamorada and go to Manny and Essa's Green Turtle Inn. They have a huge shell from an old Greenie hanging on the wall as you go in. I would guess it was from back before there was a protected species act.

Back in the late 60s early 70s I had friends that hunted Green Sea Turtles and we had barbeques where he brought over turtle meat to throw on the fire. Though it was tasty it didn't taste any different from lean beef to me so never justified the killing of them at least not for me. I think allot of people hunted them for their shells as a trophy with the meat being being a fringe benefit. The main predator of these turtles are Tiger Sharks, and when they outlawed the hunting of Sea Turtles and their population increased so did the Tiger Shark population and subsequent shark attacks on humans.
The problem with hunting Tiger Sharks is this, though many native Hawaiians (Kanaka Maoli) have accepted a form of Christianity they still cling to old ways one of which is the belief in family guardian spirits known as "Aumakua" which take on the form of living creatures such as the Pueo (Owl), Io (Hawk), Puhi (Moray Eel), Honu (Sea Turtle), and the most popular of these the Mano- Tiger Shark. Whenever someone kills a Tiger Shark there is an uproar in the native Hawaiian community so the Hunting of Tiger Sharks though not illegal is discouraged.TedH wrote:Sounds like it's time to go Tiger Shark hunting.
