Another vote for buck knives. Quality per price is hard to beat. If u can break um, they fix it for free. Used the General for a hunting knife for at least 30 years. It holds a nice edge and resharpens easy, which is an important point if your edge sharpening challenged as I

am.

Another vote for Buck fixed blade knives and I'll throw Kershaw fixed blades into the mix. But I may add that I religiously avoid all China/Taiwan knives anymore which, sadly to say, most of the Buck knives you see at places like Walmart and other places are. Buck and Kershaw still have knives made in USA but you have to make sure.

For outdoor activity I prefer a fixed blade but personally don't like a big knife and the biggest I have/use is a 5" Kabar (the small version of their USMC fighting knife). Other than that my favorite camp, fishing and small game knife is the 3 1/2" Mini Mentor and my favorite hunting knife is the Bass Pro exclusive 3 1/4" Mini Vangard. Unfortunately I don't think either are still made but I'm pretty sure you can still get the Mini Mentor online (think ebay). Dispite the slightly longer blade on the Mini Mentor it's actually the smaller knife and shorter overall. Kinda on the lines of a bird and trout knife.

Here's a vote for SOG, or Cold Steel....if you can find them, the USA made Scherade/Uncle Henry/Old Timers were tops in my book. Anza is worth a look, as is Knives of Alaska brand. I always thought Buck steel was brittle....one broke off in a deer pelvis when I twisted hard on it, and another broke a half inch off the tip when I stupidly dropped it on rock.

I sometimes carry this Marbles safety knife it's a bit of a compromise between a folder and a fixed.

You could do a lot worse than a simple Russell Camp knife. Carbon steel, strong and takes a helluva edge.

If I'm woodsloafing, w/o a gun, I like a larger knife, like a Cold Steel Trail Master or Laredo Bowie.

But as a game-dressing accessory when hunting, I much prefer a 4" bladed (+/-) drop-point Hunter to anything else.

My swept-blade, skinner-type blades stay in camp untilI need them, as do the camp & heavy axes.

I've also come to prefer Stag as a handle/scale material.

For a real "hunting" knife, it's hard to beat the Cold Steel Master Hunter.. i have 5 of those, scattered through my gear..

I prefer the Carbon V blades, made in USA... Check around at gun shows and flea markets...

I like Bucks, Gerber & Schrade but like Schrade the best. This is my most common fixed blade companion,

But I do use folders alot, again I choose Schrade over Buck most times though I have several of each. The Bucks, while they sure hold an edge well, tend to be brittle in my experience. Never broke a Schrade but I'd lost the tip off several Bucks. Unfortunately it seems most if not all Schrades are made in China now.

Pitchy, I believe the knife you have in the photo at one time was the Old-timer Deerslayer?/Deerhunter. I once found a Sharpfinger in the woods of the same make.

Thanks, i just put a new point on it and oiled up the leather and it don`t look to bad, might be a good knife.

Had 2 Recon Tantos when i was in the service of the .gov and passed them on to other guys when i left the theatre of operations. I use several other Cold Steel products today, but the one that jumps to my mind is the Bushman -- like Buck's MAster Hunters . i have a passel of Bushman's scattered through my gear - the Bushman is an ugly knife, and i think it is an overseas contract knife to boot , but for a no nonsense blade, they are awesome --- (not my pics below , just some from photobucket of what the homely blades look like -- but they are ugly the same way a HK91 is --- which means it is still ugly, but comforting at the same time

)

My large knives that I have carried in the woods. Top (Issued) Randal, 2nd Cold Steel Laredo Bowie, 3rd Custom Bowie a friend made for me, 4th (Bottom) A Chris Reeve won in a pistol match. I carry a skinning knife with these when hunting large game and a pocket knife for small game.
I would vote for the Cold Steel for tough and price.

I am another one who carries the Cold Steel Master Hunter as my belt knife. I also have the Carbon V USA made. Some came with gut hooks but I have no need for that. Takes and holds a nice edge.
I have RIGID fixed blade that I put together a long time ago. It is stainless, unknown type, with a 3 or 31/2 inch drop point. It's only purpose in my life has been for field dressing deer. It never has lived anywhere but in my hunting pack.
I also really like the Russell Green River blades. I have many of these and they serve to butcher deer, kitchen duty and back up to my Master Hunter. They are available w/o scales so that you can dress them as you wish.
Like probably most of us I have knives of all brands scattered everywhere but these are my main fixed blades.

i like the anza knives i carry one daily the anza wrangler with a stag handle. hard to beat an old file blade for an easy edge that will hold an edge.

I am a big fan of this knife. It was made by a friend. It has a big handle which I like. The blade is just shy of 4".

The Russell Green River knife is another favorite. A timeless design. While it may lack flair, it is a good knife for everything from small game to cat fish to deer to cutting up potatoes.

There are many good knives out there. Drop point knives seem to be more popular than clip points now. I do like to have some dedicated game knives just for game that stay sharp and never get abused like this Sharpfinger. It is too delicate to be abused.

I think there is a cut off point of about 5" for a knife on your belt before it starts to be unhandy to wear. I usually have a Japan made Kershaw Black Gulch 3120 or Gerber Gator 650 in my pocket when I am in the woods as they are abuse ready and a fixed blade knife in my pack or hunting bag.

I am a huge fan of the Gerber Sportsman steel for sharpening in the field. They are discontinued but on Ebay and sometimes you find one somewhere. If I ever lost mine I would give $100 for another one.

First I have a bunch of knives. My favorite that I was stupid enough to let go was a hand made Dave Beck Tracker he made for me BEFORE the knife was featured in the movie "the hunted". However I have said for years if I had to go with one knife in the woods, or my butt was on the line a USMC KBar fighting knife is the one I would grab everytime, as such I have 3. One in my truck, one in my Bug out bag, and one for general use. I also have a couple other hand made knives but for value,toughness and utility I like the K-Bar.

I have 2 Jefferson Spivey Sabretooth knives.

The saw-teeth on the back make short work of cutting through a bucks breastbone during field dressing & the knives hold a razors edge even when cutting through and around moose hair which dulls lesser knives in a jiffy.

They go for around $290 each.

Excellent field dressing & survival tool & if you drop your gun and your nose to nose with a peeved off hog I'd rather have one of these in my hands than a puny little folding knife.

These aren't made any more, but the Chris Reeve One Piece Line are great knives. This one has a 5.5" blade which is as long as I like. If I need something heavier, I go with a Woodsman's Pal. http://www.woodmanspal.com/

I hate those junk knives made of cheap steel.
You spend more time sharpening than dressing out game animals and they still won't take an edge.
Bought a humungous 5 and dime store special bowie knife when I was a kid.
It musta weighed a coupla pounds & cost $4.95 back then.
I thought I had a real prize on my belt til I tried to cut something with it.
Bloody thing wouldn't sharpen up enough to cut fresh bake bread.
Dad finally found a use for it at the bloody stump outside the chicken coop where he separated the clucking end from the frying end of the bird.

Top is my old Army Randall that I still prefer but it's a bit large/heavy for most folks. Below is a Blackjack Randall #1 clone that is actually a very nice kife:

I really like that knife but they are not made in the U.S. any longer and that's a bummer. I can recommend the U.S. made Blackjacks without hesitation, but they are usually not stainless steel if that matters.

Muela of Spain makes some nice looking and reasonably well made knives, sometimes at good prices if you find them on sale. Boker of Germany is a step up and I like their products also, especially their stag handled knives.

If you are looking for an American made, fixed blade knife that is under $20 and razor sharp check out the Paklite series knives by Buck. They have a skeletonized handle(wrapped mine in parachute cord) making them very light weight and when on your belt you forget they are there, can't say that about to many fixed bladed knives. I got the small skinner and its a joy to carry, it weighs 2.5 oz and has a 2 & 7/8 inch blade, one day I'll make a leather sheath but the coradura one will due for now. They have a bigger skinner that has a 3.5 inch blade and weighs 4.1 oz. It can be had for about $25 at Wal-mart. These knives are well made and are not flimsy. They cut corners on the handles and the coradura sheath which is OK but at this price you get a good blade.

I'm not suggesting these knives are close to a Randall but if you got a budget like mine and buy American when you can, here you go !! It has Buck's forever warranty too.
