Pumps have been mentioned, rare guns but still historic

Post by Shrapnel »

I have pumps in centerfire and I love them. 2 Colt Lightnings, a Burgess Wrist/slide-pump action rifle and shotgun. The Burgess guns are really rare. Andrew Burgess was a gun designer, second only to John M. Browning in his gun genius. Here are some pictures...

The Colt's are first gneration guns in 45 Colt, 44-40 and 38-40. I use them all and shoot Cowboy Action with them as well. The 45 has handmade Rosewood grips, the 44-40 has Ivory grips, the 38-40 has buffalo bone grips. I have seven SAA's total, here are some close-ups of the buffalo bone grips on the 2 38-40's...

That Burgess wrist-action pump is wild. I'd love to see a video of that gun being fired.

I knew you had some nice guns, but wow. You're a lucky man.

I see you like the longer tubes in your Colt SAA's. Tell us about the sub 4 3/4" one with the Bisley hammer spur.

The Colt has it's own unique provenance, but it wouldn't have the impact without the letter that I got with it...

There is no known set other than this one. I did get it at auction about a year and 1/2 ago. James Julia had another one, but it was a single rifle, no second barrel. I saw it in Cody at the WACA show in June and that is when I realized I would like the Burgess. It was listed as a Colt-Burgess, but it obviously isn't. I would guess this is the same gun.

Andrew Burgess was a gun designer and eventually started his own gun company in the 1890's. This gun was made there only as a low production gun that never made it into full production to create any real market.

He also built the same type of shotgun, which I pictured here too. I have been collectiong whatever I can on Burgess and his guns. These Whitney Kennedy's are of Burgess design as well, one is a saddle ring carbine, the other is an early "S" lever, both in 44-40

I use Cowboy Action bullets at .429 and they shoot great. The Burgess rifle has an oversized bore on it, but luckily, it shoots great too. The rifling looks like a cannon at the muzzle...

This thread remind me of just how close I was to buying a Taurus Thunderbolt in 45 long... Sexy things but I heard too many stories of feed issues to take a chance.

Dont suppose there is patent drawing for that wrist pump? She is awesome....I would happily pay a couple hundred dollars for scaled drawings of that action if someday you would draw it out and sell the drawings to hobby gunsmiths like myself.. .. I spend months of my freetime building functioning replicas of common guns, its a shame I dont spend that time recreating something rare and wonderful and made in America...

I haven't seen any such thing, and I keep my eye out for anything Burgess related. If you really are capable of reproducing that gun, you would be amazed at the quality of workmanship on this gun. Come on over to my house and I would be glad to have you look at it and measure it for yourself. You could maybe build us each a copy, I doubt it would take long or cost much...

Unfortunately I am only a hobbiest and cannot work on anybody elses guns because of numerous laws against unlicensed folks doing that very thing....And anyway I am no Turnbull either.. But I am a machinist with shop full of machinery and should be able to replicate that wrist pump rifle/shotgun if I had a fair set of drawings. You may have seen some of my builds on this forum ..

http://www.levergunscommunity.com/viewt ... =1&t=23992

That is an awesome firearm and I very nearly salivated on my screen when I seen it first on Bruce Hamlins Pump Rifle forum.. I bet it causes quite a commotion when you pull it out to shoot cowboy action..
